Ahh, so I guess you're arguing that we shouldn't be doing reconstruction?

No one's really arguing here Pug now are they? What is apparent from the article however is who exactly is profiting from the 'war on terror'.

Just how are people who are building a country's infrastructure "mercenaries"?

If you hired Iraqi contractors/civilians, have your army train and supervise them, (as they have trained some of the police) you would be doing much more benefit to both the people and country.

Plus winning the hearts and minds.

It would also cost less, don't you agree?

Funny how the owner of Blackwater is a Fundamentalist Christian Rapture nutter who is profiteering from war. Not very Christian.

Well apparently according to a lot of Christians on this forum the commandment 'Thou shalt not kill' is actually 'Thou shalt not murder' and hence they can wriggle out of accusations of breaking the commandments by trying to justify their killings as being of some benefit to 'the greater good' of free Iraqis or the Western world.

Basically the goalposts can be moved whenever it suits.

You know it's funny how everyone mentions Blackwater, clearly the worst company out there. It's like saying all ISP's are shit money grabbing corporations because you've got AOL.

My uncles a contractor in Iraq with a proper company. One that doesn't fire randomly down a street shouting "YEEE HAAA GET SOME MOTHERFUCKA!!!".

That's true but Blackwater has done an incredible amount of damage to the public image of contractors in Iraq and the subsequent lack of punishment for the numerous Blackwater incidents has led many people to continue to criticize the US for the way in which they hand out and regulate contracts in Iraq.

Blackwater should be shut down as soon as possible. Where the hell is their public relations guy? Sitting in the back too afraid to speak up.

Your right. Maybe it would be easier to fire Blackwater and hire someone else who can do a respectable job.

Who'd responsible for doing that, then..?

The Bush Administration.

There's over 20 contracting agencies. Just shut down BW and if they want to join another more professional company they can go through rigorous tests.

Contractors hire the local folks.  I have a friend who managed an Iraqi work team of about 150.

Hmmm...so before the war, Saddam kept everything....

....after the war contractors rebuild and the Iraqis get a bigger share of the profits then they did with Saddam.

Or did I get that wrong?

Then that's great, he's doing exactly what he should be.

The sad matter of the case is that most of the contractors don't do this.

And for spending 85 billion US dollars, you have to ask where most of the money has ended up.

Hold on, let me see if I follow your logic here. The allied forces declare war on Iraq and destroy most of the infrastructure and the Iraqis are supposed to be pleased because some of them get hired as part of the rebuilding process? To me that would be like someone smashing into my car and then paying me to repair it.

Ahhh, maybe I'm arguing that if you hadn't destroyed the country in the first place there would be nothing to rebuild and hence no money to be made out of the situation.

Iraqi was a functioning society. People didn't send their wages to Saddam. They worked they got payed, they could invest, develop etc, just like any other nations ppl. Yes their was a tyrant at the helm, but he didn't micro manage every piece of business in the country. They weren't Communist. Way more Iraqis out of work today than before the "war of terror".
The people making the most money out of Iraqi are Americans. American arms companies and their employees manufactured and profited from all the toys used to flatten the place and are now profiting from rebuilding what they flattened. Are there any large Iraqi owned construction firms winning tenders? Or are Iraqis casual labour for western contractors?

I didn't know who you were addressing.  I guess the US shouldn't have gone to iraq in the first place.  That can't be fixed, so I guess you should GTFO and let Iraq sort their shit out.  Now are you happy with your money being spent in Iraq?
