Is paypal a really safe site to use for online shopping?

Very safe (unless you have spyware on your computer) and convenient.

You really have no reason to be weary or cautious of PayPal, they're straight-up one of the most reliable and secure payment sites on the Internet.

Just have some common sense when you decide who to engage in transactions with, that's what you need to be worried about more so than the actual payment service.

I'd go as far as saying Paypal are the safest means to do transactions with. (mainly because of their policies, also. Not their fees!)

Paypal isn't used by eBay, it's OWNED by eBay.
So is Skype, and that's where problems come in, a while back Skype+Paypal changed their policies, now you can;t get Skype Credit unless you have a Credit Card linked to your account(no debit, and no Paypal Balance) It's complete bullshit.

Paypal does the exchange rate for you and charges a few cents fee (I think) for converting it.

When you buy something, it'll automatically do currency conversion for you, only problem I've had so is that it doesn't tell you the exact amount it's gonna take from your Bank until after you confirm, so it'll tell you the value in American that you send, but not the Canadian balance,

After you confirm, you can go into your account, under Recent Transactions hit "View Details" and it'll tell you the conversion rate, how much they;re gonna take, and when it'll go through(it takes a week for a debit withdraw to go through

Keep in mind that Paypal is not flawless. If you happen to get scammed or such, it may or may not be a nightmare to get your money back.

I've never had problems with Paypal before, however, as with every service: There are websites out there with countless of reports by people who have had issues.

One of the most intresting things about Paypal, brought up in these websites, is that Paypal is not a bank, and therefore is not obliged to follow the worldwide banking legislations: It seems very much the same idea as giving a shop on the high street your money, and them then passing the money onto who you wanted it to be passed onto.

I have never looked much into this: I am happy with Paypal, and trust them (not that I use it very often)..... Just thought I would mention it

Well I myself use PayPal for every single online transaction, providing the E-Store or service supports it. I actually find it cumbersome and a pain in the arse to type in my credit/debit card details now- that should attest to how convenient and easy PayPal is, and how lazy is makes you when it comes to online shopping .

I have never once had a bad deal with PayPal and I've easily used it to pay for more than £2,500's worth of stuff. From high-street retailer's online stores, to game/website subscriptions, to clothes shopping from a range of well-known and small-scale shops etc. Never had one single problem. Highly recommend; secure, rigid and best of all damn convenient!

I wasn't aware there was a 'waiting' period. Set-up a free PayPal account, fill in your credit/debit card details and then it's ready to use as soon as you want. At least that's how the system works over here in the UK/Europe- don't know about banking security or systems elsewhere.

There isn't a "waiting period" per-se.

This doesn't apply to Credit Cards, but for Debit, here's the process:

    Fill in your Debit information
To verify that you own that account, Paypal will deposit 2 sums of pennies to your account($0.37 and 0.18 for example) and it'll ask you to verify  the sums. It takes about 4 days for this to work(for a Canadian account, Americans are faster)
Your account will now be verified
Go shop, now there are 2 paths to take here,
         1. The store is nice, fill in your cart, check out, sign into paypal, it'll tell you that you;re deducting from a debit account, hit submit, wait a  week for it to go through. Then the store ships
     OR
         2. The store is stupid and doesn't let you echeck directly, then you go to Paypal.com, sign in hit the "Add Funds" button, add some nice even amount that's more than you expect to buy($50) confirm, wait a week.
at this point, the $50 is in your Paypal Balance, NOW you can go directly to the store and checkout, then it'll deduct the money from your paypal balance and the store'll ship right away.

I tried to make this easy to read, but it's late and that's as easy as I'm willing to make it.

So basically, 2 weeks is your best bet for getting something to your door, but that's very unlikely, assuming you pick the best day and time to sign up(with how weekends work out, if you sign up on a bad day, you'll have to sit throguh 2 weekends) and also assuming that you pay for teh overnight or 2 day shipping.

I used paypal once, way back before they were big... They saved my credit card info even though I didn't want them to.

Later, I tried to delete my account to get my info off their servers... I just prefer if my credit card number was recorded on as few servers as possible, personal choice. Anyways, I couldn't remember the password.. and being younger and dumber when I saw their "X more failed loggins and the account will be locked until you reset it" Well, at the time I figured that was good enough... Failed a few more times and got the account locked down.

Year or so later, I needed to pay for something, and they were my only option... so I tried to make a new account. They wouldn't let me as the credit card was already on file. Being a little older, I figured if I couldn't use it anyways I better get my card out of their system.

Gave them a call, and told them I wanted my credit card number removed from their system. They said THE ONLY WAY to do that was by logging in. I explained, and they still refused. They said for security the only way that could be done was online. I offered to verify the card again by gicing them numbers, I had the card, its pin number ect....

Nope, gotta go online... I asked them what I needed to do to unlock the account and get my password. They required a copy of my identification, and a copy of my social security card. What the fuck? They don't have my social security number, and I fucking refuse to give it to them. My whole problem with them was having too much of my info on file, now they want more info? I told them they didn't have my social security information to verify it against in the first place, and refused.... So they refused to do anything, even remove my credit card information from the system.

So bare careful, if you ever need to do anything administrative they may demand to look at your penis, or cup your balls while you cough. Fuck pay pall, fuck them in nosey assholes.
