The two conventions probably.

No more compromise...... if people dont respect what I think and my reasons for thinking them, then I will not do the same for them.
Sorry ya think I do not respect your opinions even if I rarely agree with them. I can say that was never my intention.

I wonder how many flags were left after the Republican convention, if any?

All flags at the GOP convention are carried away to heaven by majestic bald eagles, as aussie reminded us.

Pretty nice to mock what you apparently just do not understand.
This is what I beleive is patriotic. To feel pride over something like this:

https://www.sligocameraclub.org/wp-content/uploads/2006/10/Iwo%20Jima.jpg

Now bear in mind that this wasn't the first flag raised at Iwo Jima. The first photograph taken is far less spectacular.

Sorry that a bed sheet with the flag on it doesn't fill me with pride in a nations worth.

Can't the leaders of our country just GROW THE FUCK UP? Politicians spend more time making petty attacks against one another than they do trying to make our country a better place.

We were not talking about linen or clothing that are designed after the American flag; I could care less about them.  You brought that up, not Sgt Heim or myself.  We were talking about actual flags.  Miniature ones, yes, but real flags nonetheless.

Well one may argue that flags, ANY flags are simply symbols. Furthermore, one may argue that linens and clothing also harbors that same symbolism as the linens and clothes that reflect the flag.

you guys are all tools. who gives a shit, really? yeah, the flag is an important national symbol. yeah, if you're going to get rid of them you should burn them. somebody made a mistake, or maybe they're really telling the truth. find something worthy to bitch about or shut the fuck up.

Lines and clothing may carry the sentiment, perhaps, but not the symbolism. Men and women are not expected to salute a pair of underwear, just because someone put some stars and some red and white stripes on it.  There is a definate difference. There is an actual definition as to what constitutes the American Flag, and also for what makes an American flag the National Colors.

Its actually a distress signal, its illegal to use it like that unless its life or death.

That guy is just a moron.
Irony?

It's illegal to hold a piece of cloth a certain way unless it's life or death? If I was out in the middle of the woods and I had no toilet paper, yet there was a strange abundance of flags... you can bet on what I'd use. It's a piece of cloth, an embroidered little decoration, it is meaningless. How strange that your national pride manifests itself in some silly little national formality. I thought Evangelicals and Christian fundamentalists in the Bible Belt were the dictionary definition of irrationality but after seeing how vexed you all get at a flag being thrown away or displayed the wrong way up... Jesus Christ on a stick!

Us "Euro's" have flags, sure. We have a Union Jack and sure I admit is represents something. It's a symbol of our country. But we can be patriots and we can have great national pride without having to treat a piece of fabric as if it was the warming blanket that was wrapped around baby Jesus after he was born. I think the only time we really display our Union Jack with any semblance of pride is when we're playing international football :P. And then I bet they're all thrown away as well! A flag Holocaust! Oh my Goebbles!

Well that silly little formality is a big deal here. Our flag is a symbol of our independence, our National anthem centers on it. So if you don't like our response to it, fuck off.

He-ey no, your response is a perfectly reasonable one. I mean, after all you're only deciding the future President of one of the most powerful nations in the world. I think it's applaudable that you have such high standards and demanding criteria for your parties and candidates:

- Does s/he have any pregnant relatives? (Bonus points for being young!)
- Does s/he have any affiliations or acquaintances that are a) Muslim, b) terrorists or c) not from the US?
- Did s/he put 'Devout Christian' in the 'Religion' field of any surveys or polls?
- Did their representative party treat a piece of cloth in the appropriately respectable manner?

... That's a real gauntlet you've set there. I'm sure only the highest calibre of individual will rise to meet your needs as a nation; a true embodiment of excellence; a real political mastermind.

Don't you feel that your liberty and great personal freedom is undermined and deflated somewhat by the way you sum it up in a flag? With such a garish and unattractive pattern too! You could have at least put some ninja's or lions or something on it - you know, something attractive and worth having pride in. Stripes are sooo 1650! In all seriousness I respect the principles and values that you see in your flag and your national identity... but at the end of the day, it's just a flag. Perhaps the DNC organisers didn't want to go through the uneconomical hassle of setting up a small Auschwitz-complex with 100 fires in order to dispose of the tons of flags in the 'appropriate' manner.

Random trivia: My grammar school produced the poet that penned and composed your national anthem! Sweeeeet!

Of course, it is granted that all of these customs will be codified and written down. But each and every country has a history you know, and all of the customs and traditions that go with it... and our politicians aren't completely lambasted and hung every time they fail to adhere to one of the traditions. As I said it would probably rather uneconomical and time-wasting to dispose of that many flags in the appropriate and respectful American manner. It just seems seems like a gross over-reaction to me when this sort of thing makes news amidst the electoral campaign. It's actually quite scary in fact, just how 'badly' some people take such a trivial and unimportant gesture.

I do with we'd publically deride and quarter our public speakers and politicians though... everytime they committed a small faux pas. Would make the political arena over here in Europe so much more entertaining .

Indeed, the privilege is all yours! I just hope, pray and implore you and all of your fellow Americans that something as meaningless and blunderous as failing to dispose of flags properly isn't on the forefront of your mind when you go and tick that voting card! I can see where you're coming from when you see it as disrespectful and inappropriate, but it really would be a capital crime to let it influence your democratic process.

Oh and see here for the Wiki entry mentioning the tune-writer as an Alumni Didn't know myself until the other week while I was perusing Wikipedia in boredom! I also see another Alumni signed the American Declaration of Independence on behalf of Georgia. Small world!

At what point then does it become a flag, and not just material? You say that basing off the flag you couldn't care less about. So why do you get so upset by miniature flags, that obviously aren't "actual" flags that wave from a flag pole or are draped over a coffin?

Miniature flags are real, but a bed sheet flag is not? There's still meaning there. And a sense of patriotism, dependent on whose sleeping under the covers.

You can't argue that what the Democrats did was outrageous, and at the same time say that bikini flags, toilet paper flags, or bed sheet flags don't offend you and you could care less about them. If one is unpatriotic, they all are.
