Saudi Arabia walked out on OPEC yesterday. It said it would not honor the cartel's production cut. It was tired of rants from Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and the well-dressed oil minister from Iran.
So MSN is predicting this could be the end of OPEC. It would be nice to get rid of the oil cartel, but I don't know that I believe this is really it. The Saudis have been at odds with OPEC over production volumes the last few months. They're trying to raise production to lower costs, everyone else loves the high price of oil now, and the revenue it generates, and wants to decrease output to keep it high.

Maybe the Saudis are finally making a friendly move towards their reluctant BFF America (the relationship has been pretty one-sided so far), but I believe they don't give a crap about the economic pain we're experiencing. They're smart enough to see how fast everyone's jumping on the hybrid/alternative fuel bandwagon and know they're days are numbered otherwise. What the hell would Saudi Arabia export if no one wanted oil? Oppression of women? Sand? No thanks.

I thought the whole point of OPEC was to "Whereever possible, rise the price" or something...

I think you hit the nail on the head.  Everyone else wants to keep prices high for the extra cash, but the Saudis know people won't tolerate this forever.  Higher prices will lead people to find alternatives to oil, and they know they have nothing else to offer.  Unlike the UAE that are expanding and trying to get an international business/tourist industry, they have one thing only...oil exports.

I'm sure that policy worked at some point. But oil has gone up something like 500% in the past 10 years and now they've pushed their luck too far. Alternative fuel sources was a topic for hippies until just recently. Now everyone's getting in on the action.

What's that going to do to the price of oil?

Competition should drop the price of oil nice and low. If this really happens, I'm guessing we could see gas prices cut drastically.

Isn't gas gonna run out in like 20 years, oil in about 50-75 and coal in about 300 years?

People are starting to use more gas though...

Sorry, by "gas" I meant gasoline/petrol. I've heard that oil will run out in that time frame, but haven't heard anything about gas or coal. Makes sense though, it's hard to support 6 or 7 billion people with a finite resource. Hopefully the superefficient solar cells they're working on will be ready on schedule (5-10 years) and fossil fuels will become worthless. They'll be just about getting those off-shore drilling rigs online, nice waste of taxpayer money there.

Oil resources will be drastically reduced in 20 years unless new big finds comes along ... Gas is the new oil tbh and will last for awhile longer ... coal i don't know ...

What? Is this real or a hypothetical scenario? I can't find anywhere else that says that SA has left OPEC.

Saudi hasn't left OPEC outright.  They have just walked out one of their many meetings where they band together and suck each other cocks.

.....But already it seems unlikely that Saudi Arabia, the oil-exporting cartel's biggest producer, would choose to brazenly flout the guidelines and risk an open rift with the group.

Not only arabs that is involved in this business.

Ah I see what you mean. Yes, the fucking is a fairly international event, no question about it. And presumably it can't have been that beneficial to the Arabs otherwise the Saudi's would have stayed in OPEC.

They haven't left yet. We'll see what happens in the end. I'd love to see the oil industry become competitive, but even with the clout the Saudis have, the pressure from the other members may be too great for them to leave.
