And by cheaters I mean people who have modified the game in some way to give them an advantage, like wall hacks or radar hacks (ie not stat padders, not people who exploit glitches, etc)

only because I don't think its punkbusters job to stop glitches -- that should be the EA team patching them.

Only the most idiotic hack would get caught by punkbuster, punkbuster has to know what the hacks are if its going to catch them and they don't know jack shit.

I guess you never bothered to take a peek at the monthy MBL (Master Ban Lists) over at PB. Lots of users are caught using Multi-Hacks, and specific hacks...Or other unapproved modifications. While there are for sure some undetected cheat programs out there, most have come to the attention of PB.

PB cannot detect glitches. However exploiting glitches, whether others know about them or not is a direct violation of the EULA and could very well result in your character being banned and/or having your stats wiped.

I was speaking to guy the other day who said that BF2, was one of the worse games for re-scripting (i.e It is easy to make hack for).  I don't know a lot about what PB does behind the scenes in BF2 but I know two other games where it is a lot more integral to the programme.  On America's Army, PB has to go through a visable authorisation process when you load up a server and it will update itself while it's doing it.  It also take in-game screen shots from your PC and send them to the server (NO matter what hack someone's using, be it know or unknown it will almost certainly show something on their screen to show they're using it) and PB would check them (well I hope they did).  The other game is World Of Warcraft where PB tells you that it has the right to scan your entire hard drive for cheats (not just the programme folder).

BF2 seems to have no visual representation to show you what PB is doing which doesn't really put my mind at ease....

hacks detected by PB are found by scaning known modified memory addresses, ie wall hacks modify a certain part of the memory, and pb detects this change. at least i think this is one of the ways pb checks for hacks. Its just a shame most memory hacks are only a 2 minute ban if detected - which is bloody stupid, should be permanent. I think pb does a fairly good job of detecting hacks though.

PB in combination with PsB does stop most cheats.

I think they stop many cheaters eventually.
all we can do is report cheats as much as possible and slowly we capture more and more cheaters

PunkBuster is like Anti-Virus software. It stops the current viruses but that doesn't stop the Malicious Programmers/Scripters from developing other hacks for it. Until it sees one, then they can develop a way to detect it. But only after they see it.

Excuse me because I'm not a programmer but I would guess the difference the job it has to do between AV software and PB is quite different.  AV's have to scan the computer because each one is unique and may have countless safe and unsafe files but they don't have a benchmark with which they know how Windows must look.  With BF2, all the files that is uses to run should be exactly the same on every computer (besides options settings but they could be ignored) so I don't see why it can't scan all the files BF2 uses and if they aren't exactly how they should look, ban!  Obviosuly expansion packs would have to be catered for but I can't see why PB needs to know how a hack works before they can ban it.  If the game files have been modified in any way, assume a hack and ban, simple!!!!

Well ... there are Proactive ways to detect hacks.
MOST hacks don't touch the files ... thats way to easy to detect, instead they mess with memory addresses ... or hook DLL files.

DLL hooks are probibly the hardest things to combat, however it's also the most complex.

In reguards to s4vior6's comment about PB being like anti-virus .. it is, it looks for known segments of code that are used to hack games. However, it will also scan a game's files looking for files that appear out of place ... or missing. (punkbuster throws a fit when you remove some of the movie files to speed up the loading) It also keeps watch on a game's memory in ram.

It's also possible for a program to turn off the hack while PB is performing a memory scan, hard drive can, or file scan that would possible flag the program as a hack.

Disclaimer statement:
Yes, i am a hacker... that said i have never actually put my skills to use on a video game ... I know how my evil counter parts work.  The people that waste their time ruining games for good people are nothing more then magots. Infact they inspire my anti-cheat research.. still working on away to prevent DLL hooking. >.<

thers one good thing about injecting dll's though. if the person using it is stupid enough to use a stealth injecter they'll get a hardware ban.

It's working based upon all the losers whining about hardware bans on many web sites although it will never be 100% effective since new hacks come out all the time.  Every day I laugh at all the rants and moans from these cheaters.

The good news is that the BF2 and other gaming communities can expose cheats, cheaters, and cheating websites by emailing research@evenbalance.com.  PB does a fairly good job keeping up with the latest versions of the cheats but needs your help.

New Poll: Are you afraid of getting caught by punkbuster?
Oh, wait, I forgot, you're too dumb to not post your exploits on a forum. You're going to get caught either way with your intelligence anyway.

Don't bother worrying about punkbuster. Worry about your stupidity.

Punk Buster has been a pain for me, I seem to get an often error of failed to load pbag and get kicked out of a game.

considering i have never actually witnessed a hack while in-game that i know of, i'd say that PB does a pretty good job.  this is in comparison to VAC2 with CSS...which is worthless.

I remember seeing stuff in my enemy terrirtory days where i'd see someone get PB banned almost everyday.

There'd be like, a server wide "aaah, so THATS how he killed me so often" chat conversation.
