My what? Processor or GPU?

I found the bf2 discs, completely uninstalled, reinstalled and patched. Same stupid FPS

Anyone know if there would be any potentially magical settings that I could change in the nVidia control panel? Right now I have it set to let the application decide, but I have tried some of the "advanced" image settings without improvement.

Yeah changing from T1/Lan to Cable/256 improves lag in game when playing online, also, when in game open the console and type:

pb_sleep 500 (hit enter)

then type:

pb_writecfg (hit enter)

Those two settings help combat lag. I'd also make sure you set the audio renderer to 'Hardware' and 'Medium' and restart your game. Its also handy to disable VIOP if you're not too bothered about in game comms over BF2.

If you play BF2 for high good looking graphics ignore what im about to say. Otherwise, i'd recommend changing your res (if possible) and making all video settings to Medium, lighting to Low, dynamic light and shadows to Off, geometry to High and view distance scale to 100%. Apply those settings, quit game, go clear your shader cache, restart game and load a map. Then, again, quit game, defrag your hard drive.

I should think you'll see a vast improvement after doing that, everyone i know of that has done it, has had improved gameplay and fps. No harm in trying, let me know the results.

Just something in general, I have no idea specifically. Just that your computer is much better than mine, and 63 fps @ 1900x1200 is probably better than 111 at 1280x1024.

I could be completely wrong, who knows.

To Baggs: just tried those things, problem didnt go away. I put all the graphics settings to low and the fps only went up to around 130 on Wake . I know my rig can do wayyyy more than that... I think Ig said he got 300+ fps with similar hardware and settings.

To Timah: It might be because it was 2xAA on yours, and 4xAA on mine... Who knows

I ran Rivatuner in the background and had it measure CPU and video memory usage. CPU was at 50% for both cores (side note: I have tried running BF2 on single core and it didnt change anything) and video memory went to about 180 mb.

Anyone have any other ideas on what could be causing this?

PS: I cant swap the video card for something else, I sold my 8600 GTS a few weeks ago

Check if your nVidia Control Panel adds extra AA/AF to the game and check if you got V-Sync on.
I had a similar problem and I found out that my drivers added 16x AF to all games.

Pfft...130 on wake.

I get 50 FPS on Wake, and that's when I'm the only one at a base.  It drops to 15 - 20 when all the J-10 and chopper whores come in, as well as 10 or so infantry around me.

To WeBee: Neither of them were on. I tried forcing AF to 8 and I think it improved my FPS a bit... Though Im not totally sure, because the Wake server I went on to test wasnt full 64.

To Tophat: 130 if I set stuff to low. I built myself this rig so I could get away from performance along the lines, or worse than what youre getting (laptop with AMD single core 4000+ and an integrated ATI xPress 200 GFX). Now if I put the settings to high, which my system shouldnt break a sweat on, it dips down to 40 FPS. I didnt shell out $340+ for less than stellar performance on the main game I play.

An odd thing I noticed is when playing BF2 my GPU temp doesnt seem to go above 50-55 C. When playing Crysis or GRID its around 70-80 C

Yeah, I know, but if Im getting 40 FPS in places I would assume something would be straining, therefore getting hotter

GRID 80-50, never goes below that. Crysis (demo only), with the very high XP tweak Im not sure, but Im guessing 18~20. And if you read my post at the top of the page you would have seen I just reinstalled it.

Sorry for bump, but its better than a new topic

I finally got around to reformatting, and it didnt help at all . I installed nothing but BF2 and GPU drivers to make sure it wasnt a conflict.

The poor FPS is really a problem when I try to play AIX; with 64 bots on karkand stormfront I get 30-20 FPS and dips down to 8. I thought my CPU wasnt beefy enough, but then I left the task manager running in the background while I was playing and my CPU usage never went past 90%. I tried GPUZ to see how much my GPU was being used, but for some reason it wont display it. Another thing, while I was playing on karkand stormfront, my GPU temperature only went up 2 degrees compared to idle.

Is it possible that the GPU isnt going into full 3d processing mode or something? And if theres even a way, would using drivers for different G92 core cards do anything? Maybe change the cards name in windows?

PS: In my mobo's BIOS, the PCIE clock is set to 100MHz, is that something that should be changed?

I will do a quick test of BF2 on my new comp when I get home to see how it goes. Might turn out BF2 just doesnt work well on new hardware or something....although most people seem to be fine. Idk.

I now have a 9800GT and get ~130 on Wake on all High.

I'm going to try what baggs said though, cause my card runs hot (~80C) when playing.

From anything i've learnt, 100mhz is what its supposed to be.

Btw, i found this in the help section, maybe you have read it but considering you tried everything else wouldn't hurt to give this a go (still seems rediculous that you have these problems tho mate, it should just work eh!)

Step 3a: Rename the BF2.Exe

Although the exact reason why this fix improves the gameplay is unknown, but it is probably that Ati and Nvidia recognise the program BF2.exe as one of their own, so by renaming the file, you turn the game into a normal program, not a resource hungry dinosaur! In 90% of cases this has been known to cause some increase in performance in-game. To do this follow these steps:

1. The first thing you do is find your game directory, the default is C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2

2. Once you have found the directory, locate the file BF2.exe, right click, and select properties.

3. You will then need to change the text in the white box which says "BF2", above the directory on the general tab, you can change it to anything you want! for simplicity, I changed it to BF21.exe once you have done this, CLICK APPLY!

4. The fix is now officially done, but the shortcut on your desktop will now no longer work. To change this, delete the shortcut on your desktop, goto the game directory, and right click on the newly renamed file. Click Send To, then Desktop (Create Shortcut) and you will now have a working link your desktop!

5. Make BF2 a High Priority Application: Windows shares out its resources and memory between its programs equally. It also runs its own background tasks using the "System Idle Process". By Increasing the priority of an application, Windows provides more Memory to that application, and takes memory away from it's own tasks such as the "System Idle Process". You can change the priority of an application by going to ctrl+alt+delete and changing it manually, or you can set up this file to automatically launch the program as a High Priority Application, without you touching a thing!
To perform this, follow these steps:

1. Find the BF2 directory again, the default is C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 the BF2 directory (common: C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2)

2. Right click anywhere in this folder and click New then Text Document.

3. Right click on the newly created file and rename it to bf2.bat, The file should then turn into a little cog. If it doesn't, you will need to uncheck the 'Hide extensions for known file types' option checked in Tools > Folder options > View.

4. Right click your newly created bf2.bat and click Edit.

5. Copy and paste the following into the notepad window that opens:
@echo off cd /d "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2" start /high BF2.exe +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 If you have renamed your file in Tip 3 then you will need to paste the following code (if you have changed the BF2.exe to something different than BF21.exe, edit the BF21.exe to your filename)

(@echo off cd /d "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2" start /high BF21.exe +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 Don't forget, if you installed BF2 to a different directory than C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 then adjust it accordingly.)

1. Save your changes and close the Notepad window.

2. Right click the new bf2.bat and click Send To -> Desktop (create shortcut)

3. Goto your desktop, and right click the new shortcut, then click properties.

4. Click on the "Change Icon" Button, and goto your game directory C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 and double click on your BF2.exe (or BF21.exe) This makes the shortcut have a real icon, not necessary, but makes it look way better.

5. Right click on the shortcut and rename it to "Battlefield 2" or whatever you want really.

^ All that does is get you kicked from servers that do MD5 checks. It doesn't help anything, or at least it never helped me.

PCI-e bus is supposed to be 100MHz. Raising it could fuck your system, so don't do that.

Worth a try tho also, being semi skilled at BF2 gets you kicked from servers that do MD5 checks

Is there a setting in the nVidia drivers that turns on/off the 'intelligence' that causes the tip in baggs post to sometimes work?

I tried both of those... No luck . Only thing the .exe name change did was make flashing black patches on the ground

Any other ideas?

Well Ive had the card since late August (bought from Newegg) isnt there a 90 day limit on RMAs? And wouldnt a faulty card be shitty in other games too?
