So yesterday I receive an email from AVG with a new cd key for version 8.  I bought 7 about a year ago and it's a three year pack, so I was expecting this eventually.  So anyway, I set it up, install, way hey.

Now, my machine refuses to run AOL, therefor I cant get to one of my main email accounts.  I can still get on firefox, ie etc, but just not aol.  I checked the firewall settings and it is on the allow list.

Eventually, I said fuck it, and just turned the machine off last night and went to see the new bond that was previewing with my girlfriend.  I got back this morning, () to find the machine still shutting down.  Yes, 12 hours later.

Any thoughts?  Never have got on well with anti virus programes, but I really need into that email address

The machine as a whole seems to be running consistently slower aswell since I put it in.  Lot of stuttering in far cry 2 that just the other day I was running silky smooth.

Uninstall it, and ditch aol.

Oh my god, get rid of AOL! You dont need the evil bloated bullshitty software to access AOL email. Did you have any other AVs installed before AVG?

All good responses.

I am with AOL, but I refuse to install that piece of shit browser.

Just go to aol.com, or if you like direct links:

See, I hear this anti aol stuff parroted, and I cant understand really where it stems other than jumping on the bandwagon.  To be brutally honest, I havent really had a problem with them.  It was them who noticed they where over charging me about a year ago and refunded it, and gave me some free software, without me having doing, or, more to the point even knowing of the problem.

Yes, I had AVG 7.5 in, which was running fine.  The issues only began when I went to version 8.0.

I know what you mean. AOL have been nothing but great with me. Free upgrades and free routers, can't complain.

Just... The browser is horrible...

I have problems with them stemming from the days of dial-up. Just uninstall 8 and go back to 7.5 until they fix the problem.

I already rolled it back a few days, and sent emails to avg and aol asking about it.

Unless COD5 beta had anything to do with it......

Edit:  And now my hard drive is making a shit load of noise, I'll go have a look at the inside.

These are 'bout the only circumstances I'd ever suggest this as a 'first thing to do':

If the issue doesn't just go away (which I usually find happens) then re-format and re-install.

I had AOL when it was dial-up and hated it. Upgraded to cable internet and started to use IE and never looked back.

Did you upgrade over the top?  I know that often the software will say it found an older version and say it needs to uninstall it, but you may need to do it manually, reboot, then install the software again; this could include setting up your allow/deny lists.
