Well. I had sort of half planned to make myself an i7 rig when they came out.

I am reconsidering a little.

I did some quick price adding tonight and came up with these two builds.

1. i7 Build.

Asus P6T Deluxe
i7 920
6GB DDR3 Patriot
Asus 512MB 4870
Antec P182
Corsair HX-520
Seagate 500GB SATAII NCQ
Billion 3010N

$2487

2. C2Q Build.

Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L
Q6600
OCZ DDR2 4G(2x2G)PC-6400 800Mhz
Asus 512MB 4870
Antec P182
Corsair HX-520
Seagate 500GB SATAII NCQ
Billion 3010N

$1470

As you can see the only difference is the CPU, motherboard and RAM. That difference is $1017. That is a considerable amount.

Now I know i7 isnt going to make much of a difference in regard to gaming, and to be fair that is really all I will be doing other than stuff that the Q6600 will sleep through anyway (internet, office etc).

So. There isnt really a dilemna from a logical standpoint, but from massive e-penis standpoint it is a hard choice. Swallow my want for the new stuff and save $1017 I dont need to really spend? Or go for it?

Idk, hence the thread.

I am content with a 4870 for now. I have played Crysis, dont feel the urge to go back to it.

I know I would get the i7, but I'm a folding whore. You should go for the Q6600

I heard that i7 isn't all that cracked out as it is, infact when the hell was the last time we had something truly revolutionary in the CPU world. Probably around the time Core 2 came out. That was a long time ago.

Is it me or has everything just slowed down so much these days. Moore is getting angry

In raw power, the new quads are plenty faster than an E6600 two years ago.

EDIT: On topic, C2Q build.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Moore didn't say performance doubles every 18 months... he said the transistors double.

gfx battle is overheating tho.

What???

Core2 came out, what, 2-3 years ago.

That is NOT a long time ago.

Oh, and, on topic, C2Q - i7's brand spanking, still got that new smell, new. Hence it's over-priced.

no that's every 1.8 months. You gotta put the decimal point in the right place

Um.... Why don't you go for a Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.66GHz 12MB-cache (1333FSB) And keep the rest for your second rig option..... Then you are close to the performance power of the i7 yet saving a lot more. Yorkfield > Q6600.

Oh, and not Seagates, please. Samsung Spinpoints.

Get the i7.  Girlies will sleep with you because you have the newest processor

may as well wait it out, I did read that intel are fast tracking the 32nm shrink (I believe) so your investment, may not be worth epeen for very long

They seem to be quite rare in Australia for some reason.

I can hardly find a store stocking Q9450

And none in my state apparently...

real money >> e-penis.

Save a shitload of money and go with the cheaper setup. Besides, not like you'll regret it anyway since you'll be doing the same thing you would with the other one (gaming), both of which can handle it just fine. Otherwise you'll be out an extra $1000 and be wishing you just went with the cheaper setup which would have the same effect on games (or nearly the same effect) except you could've used that extra money to buy more games or other accessories and stuff.

Seems like a no-brainer to me.

You'd think so.

I am pretty much not getting the i7 I think. Hell, with the money I save I can get a new computer in 6 months anyway.

E8400 > Q6600

Also, worst time to buy a computer in Aus, prices have all jumped by about 20-25% in the last 2 or so weeks (Fucking Australian Dollar). To put it into perspective, my friend made a very similar build about 3 months ago, but also had a 22" monitor and laser mouse included and it came to about $1380, and another friend last week ordered a motherboard, but the place said it was out of stock then put th price up $50.

What's the point in a new computer if you don't spend massive amounts on the gfx card? lol

A 4870 isnt exactly a bad card.

edit:

and I have a 3800+ x2 AMD and 2gb of DDR <-- DDR RAM. It will be a significant upgrade.
