[Mac Pro] GT 120

I've always been eyeing Mac Pros for an audio studio some time down the road (sorry, I just like Logic Pro). The new ones have Nehalem Xeons. Righto.

I can't believe Apple took that rebranded piece of crap...but wait, there's more. You can put FOUR of them in your Mac Pro for awesome gaming power! Why couldn't they have just offered a GTX 285/295, since it's a brand new Mac Pro?

Now I know I wouldn't be playing games on it, but it doesn't make sense to spend over $3000 on a computer with a video card like that. I mean, who knows: I might want to do some graphics stuff.

seriously though maybe it's something to do with power? off-chance that 4 120's suck up less power than 1 gtx295?

Macs aren't gaming machines and cuda support in OSX is very limited. With 4 GPUs you can drive 8 screen however ...

It's probably because they already have drivers for the gt120, where as they'd need to write (and then test) drivers for the newer cards....

What I find entertaining about Apple is how they like to take old technology and make it seem like it's brand new. Take the new iPod Shuffle, with the voice activation, which has been around since the '90's, if not earlier. But OH SHIT, Apple's using it so it's automatically brand new technology!

It's not a games machine. It's a workstation machine. Those cards are well suited to the role the machine is designed for. They are a huge step up from the 2600XT which was the typical card fitted to the previous generation (2600XT, 8800GT, 7300GT and X1900XT were the cards most used, 8800GT has compatibility issues with earlier (65nm) models, 7300GT bursts capacitors as soon as you look at it and the fans on the X1900XT would make so much noise it drive all the MacFags mad with rage).

It's better than it was. Are you actually surprised that Macs are overpriced and underpowered?
