The 8800GTS 512MB is based on the G92 which is considerably faster than the G80 based 8800GTS 320/640MB. The G80 is just outdated

They're local to me so if I can I'll probably be going down to the warehouse today to pick up whatever I decide to buy directly
Oh ok. i was on ocuk before, and i didn't see any decent single 4850s, otherwise i'd say go for that. the 250 512mb is about £140?coke wrote:

Yeah I did hear about them running hot, but this version has apparently got an improved cooler on it, which helps with the heat issue. It does seem a good card, it's as I mention so many people have their personal preference and in a lot of cases it seems to be the deciding factor between these 2 cards, and my preference is for Nvidia. Plus virtually all the games I play are Nvidia "optimised".FatherTed wrote:
Thats a good price+brand for both cards. Id go for the 4850, but only 'cause i love mine. Thing is, the 4850s do run sort of hot...
I think they're both about the same performance (you'd have to google around to be sure). So wherever you go, should be fine.coke wrote:

That's the problem I could really do with a replacement asap, as posting on forums is about all I can do at the minute. And I need my computer...GC_PaNzerFIN wrote:
I'm going to shoot some ppl by this but... could you wait for RV740 aka HD 4770? If not either one of those will do.
then go order a nice gfx then. And if u prefer nvidia, let it be GTS 250 (9800GTX+ in disguise)coke wrote:

Yeah that another point though does the fact the really the 250 is based on an older architecture make much difference?GC_PaNzerFIN wrote:

G92 is fine for today and the near future.coke wrote:

After a fair bit of trawling reviews/benchmark/game results in my resolution in most games the 250 seems to just edge it, along with my preference for Nvidia looks like I'm gonna go for the GTX 250.Sydney wrote:

Also, I'd go for nvidia because ATi drivers in Linux fail.
You won't be annoyed with the 4850. not sure about xfx temps (you said the fans better), but my sapphire runs hot under load (a bit tooo hot). but thats down to a case which is actually more of just a frame with only the back and right panel remaining.coke wrote:
Lol ended up with 4850, as they didn't have any of 250's in...
Just tried it on Empire total war and on the land battles I run everything ultra with 8x AA and it runs just fine, the sea battles however don't so I need to tweak with that. Also whenever I start a battle the interface flickers, but as soon as I change any graphics option and it reloads it's fine.
It's too much of an issue, because as I say I just change an option and it sorts it, however when playing multiplayer it becomes a bigger issue as you can't access/change the graphics options...GC_PaNzerFIN wrote:
ETW is quite bugged for both nv and ati. flickering is a sign of driver support issue with ATi.
