Is it this one? That one should be enough
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Well I'm still undecided, I am leaning more towards the Nvidia 250, simply because of my personal preference towards Nvidia, plus it supposedly runs cooler and uses less power. And from what I can see the performance differences seem marginal. Anyone got any idea which would give me better performance on Empire Total War?

Oh ok. i was on ocuk before, and i didn't see any decent single 4850s, otherwise i'd say go for that. the 250 512mb is about £140?

Thats a good price+brand for both cards. Id go for the 4850, but only 'cause i love mine. Thing is, the 4850s do run sort of hot...

Yeah I did hear about them running hot, but this version has apparently got an improved cooler on it, which helps with the heat issue. It does seem a good card, it's as I mention so many people have their personal preference and in a lot of cases it seems to be the deciding factor between these 2 cards, and my preference is for Nvidia. Plus virtually all the games I play are Nvidia "optimised".

I think they're both about the same performance (you'd have to google around to be sure). So wherever you go, should be fine.

I'm going to shoot some ppl by this but... could you wait for RV740 aka HD 4770? If not either one of those will do.

That's the problem I could really do with a replacement asap, as posting on forums is about all I can do at the minute. And I need my computer...

then go order a nice gfx then. And if u prefer nvidia, let it be GTS 250 (9800GTX+ in disguise)

Yeah that another point though does the fact the really the 250 is based on an older architecture make much difference?

G92 is fine for today and the near future.

Also, I'd go for nvidia because ATi drivers in Linux fail.

After a fair bit of trawling reviews/benchmark/game results in my resolution in most games the 250 seems to just edge it, along with my preference for Nvidia looks like I'm gonna go for the GTX 250.

Lol ended up with 4850, as they didn't have any of 250's in...
Just tried it on Empire total war and on the land battles I run everything ultra with 8x AA and it runs just fine, the sea battles however don't so I need to tweak with that. Also whenever I start a battle the interface flickers, but as soon as I change any graphics option and it reloads it's fine.

ETW is quite bugged for both nv and ati. flickering is a sign of driver support issue with ATi.

You won't be annoyed with the 4850. not sure about xfx temps (you said the fans better), but my sapphire runs hot under load (a bit tooo hot). but thats down to a case which is actually more of just a frame with only the back and right panel remaining.

It's too much of an issue, because as I say I just change an option and it sorts it, however when playing multiplayer it becomes a bigger issue as you can't access/change the graphics options...

Um it may be an issue with driver conflict, I removed the old Nvidia ones and ran a free version of driver cleaner that I eventually managed to find, but on reboot I got 2 errors, both system 32 files:
nvcpl.dlll
NvMCTray.dll

Which are obviously linked to the Nvidia drivers I found a couple of folders, something like NVprofiles and deleted them. Not sure if that has sorted it yet though anything else I can do to make sure their gone??

Is it just me or does the 4850 have GDDR5 and the 250 have GDDR3.. wouldn't that make a big difference?
