Download accelerators

So my 30-day trial of Internet Download Manager just finished, and I need a new accelerator.

I want something simiar, so integration with Firefox would be nice, scheduled download queues, user-friendly interface, preferably free (but not essential), something I can copypasta links into etc.

It works by downloading the same file off multiple servers but in different parts and then rejoins them once the download is finished. Thus speeding things up.

I managed to get a cracked version of IDM, best thing ever. Coupled with an RS account and I'm hitting 900KB/s these days. Not bad. I get around 500KB/s when downloading normally off a good website. Haven't really tried torrents, my ISP doesn't like torrents

Emmmm, not quite.

Some servers limit the speed people can download from. Download accelerators get around this by connecting multiple times, increasing the speed by a multiple of how many times you connected.

So if you were getting a top of 200kB/s, and you connected 5 times with a download accelerator, you could, in theory, get 1mB/s.

He said you download from multiple servers, when infact you connect to the same server multiple times..

Because I don't get the speed I signed up for.

EDIT: And you can manage your downloads well, queue them, everything I described in OP tbh.

Not really. Sourcing segments of the same file from multiple repositories is a pretty classic way of accelerating downloads. A common implementation was using HTTP 1.1 ranged GET requests, with concatenation logic handled by the downloader client.

But we understand that concept today as a torrent, not when people talk about download accelerators. Things may have been different some years ago.

No, we don't. Bittorrent is just one way of fetching fragments of files. Mek wasn't describing a torrent, he was describing the general method of sourcing individual files from multiple repositories, as relevant to download accelerators. In this context, he was right in his specific explanation. There are other ways to go about it than the method he described, but he was right, and he was not describing a torrent.
