No one here realizes that. They're just a punch of post whores that will share anything, regardless of whether or not it pertains to the topic at hand or not.

To the OP: I wish I could tell you what I was paying on VZW back home before I left, but I can't. My advice to you is this, though: Shop around as much as you can. You also said you're a student. Look into a student discount of any kind with all the carriers and also check with your university and see if they have a deal with any of the carriers. If you have a job, look into what benefits the company has. I worked at a grocery store chain called Publix with was based in the south east USA that had multiple deals with companies like Dell, GM and others that would give you some nice discounts. You simply had to be an employee.

Unfortunately, shopping for a cell phone plan is not like shopping for a car where you can negotiate the price. But since you're a student, you'll have lots of opportunities to get a good deal if any of the carriers or your school have things for students.

That's a ridiculous price

I bought my N82 for $480 and I just pay as I go, usually about $10 per month.

I don't get why mobiles are so expensive in the US ($70-80/month is obscene - I pay £15/month for my phone with 200 minutes of calls and 500 texts, I never exceed that, so that's all it costs). They're really cheap everywhere else.

Is there some reason for it? Or are the telecoms companies just taking the piss?

EU legislation forcing networks to provide cheap services and even cheap international rates FTW!
Because the United States is not socialist (yet). One key law that EU has (correct me if im wrong) that we need is to prevent carriers from having exclusive phones.
I think you are wrong. Some networks here do offer exclusive phones and, even more frequently, exclusive models (which often just means a different colour and different firmware) of more widely available phones.
Also because $80 US is probably closer to 1000 minutes a month with unlimited text and a smart phone data plan...

No.  This place is like failbook and twatter where people feel the need to share everything regardless if people care or not.

I do need a phone, though. What is the best provider for the Eastern United States (Connecticut specifically)?
Fuck getting a contract, just get a pay as you go sim. Top up £10 every month and it should go the distance. You guys surely have your Yankee equivalent of that. Plus I get free texts so the £10 goes even further

My friend's dad works for them. They have cheap service for just local calls.

Here's the link to their plans:

0.o

Unless I get the £20 top up a month SIM deal with Vodafone that gives you Unlimited texts and 600 minutes, I will go over £50 in top ups. Which is why I need to change to contract very soon. You must use your phone very little.

10GBP is what, 17USD? That won't get you too far unless you don't use your phone much.

Here you can either get the phone on contract at a low price or get it off-contract at an insanely high (to us Americans at least since we're so used to contract pricing) price. And if I own an off-contract phone and on-contract phone for two years, then the off-contract will have cost me more. Because I'd still be paying however many dollars a month for two years.

Honestly now that most providers if not all of them in the US are pro-rating their early termination fees, it's becoming not as uneconomical to just terminate your contract a year early (in the smartphone world a year is a LONG time) and get a new phone.

edit: And I think every smartphone in the US requires a data plan.

Agreed with Swan. I support big government legislation when it benefits technology ^_^

@nukchebi Verizon is the best provider in arguably all the United States. It's also the most expensive along with AT&T, but when you compare quality of service, Verizon utterly destroys AT&T. This list might help you out

Verizon Wireless: Best service bar none, but not the best selection of phones. I'd go for something like the enV2 or enV3 if you don't want a smartphone, and a Blackberry Tour if you want a smartphone. Again, it's the most expensive service but also the best. Not all phones work abroad mind you (the Tour does)

AT&T Mobility: Their phone selection is great (Blackberries, HTC WinMo phones, and the iPhone) but their service is pretty awful for what you're paying. A combination of lack of caring plus overloaded networks means slow speeds even on 3G and dropped calls abound. I use them right now... they're passable in the DC area but when I was in the Bay Area I had quite a time with them to say the least.

Sprint: Verizon Jr. It uses the same network technology as Verizon does (EV-DO) and in fact allows free roaming (both voice AND data if I'm not mistaken). Their own network isn't as expansive as Verizon's or AT&T's but it covers the major metropolitan areas. Not the best phone selection. I'd go for the Tour or the Pre.

T-Mobile: Not the best service, certainly the least expansive (3G only available in major cities), but their prices are cheap and they have some sweet phones available like the Blackberry Curve 8900 and the myTouch 3G. The other nice thing is that on some phones they support UMA. Basically, you make calls, texts and obviously data over a wifi network at no cost to your minute or text allotment. Very useful in poor service areas and abroad.

AT&T and T-Mobile are the only ones whose every phone works abroad. Sprint and Verizon have some "world phones" but most aren't.
Thanks for the detailed response. It's down, it seems, to Verizon or T-Mobile.

Also, as I forgot to mention, we were considering family plans, as well. My sister doesn't have a cell phone either, nor does my dad. Does the above description hold true for these plans?

Nick, I'll be in New Haven. However, I will be needing to make calls to the Western US, so I don't think that will work.

And to whoever asked, I never needed a cell phone because whenever I was in a position to need one, I could mooch it off of a friend or someone I was with.

I personally would go with AT&T or Verizon as I been a customer of both, but only Verizon for like a year, and AT&T for like 5.
So I would have to say AT&T, but that's just me.
