This paper could have been called 'message from Vietnam' without changing a lot of it:  there is no difference between the stories told by vets from the Vietnam era and the ones told now by vets from Iraq.

The author said it himself, in the end, where he tells the only people who understand him are the vets themselfs.

Nonetheless, I still respect this guy for doing what he had to do, even though he knew very well, even more then the people at the time in Vietnam, that his mission in Iraq was politically motivated and had nothing to do with the lies told to him by the us govt at that time.

Except Vietnam was a revolution and went from a colony to independent state... Why the fuck does everyone forget about the French involvement?

No doubt a French grunt at that tiime ('50's) will have had the same feelings as written here in these stories, except they were told they were fighting for their country since it was French territory. But is there any difference?

You think any grunt in the mud gives a shit about the politics that brought him there?

The story I was told was that they faced a British officer in India and were so impressed by his courage that they chose to fight for him. Also, something about mercenaries not being allowed on the shores of England so they are stationed on the Isle of Man or something.
They're not classified as mercs iirc, I've never heard anything about that. I think it was the other way round also, the British were impressed with their courage etc..

Again, it was just the story I was told when I was there. British colonial history in India is not my forte

In fact, it's limited to the Sharpe books by Bernard Cornwell

tru story the british army did a bayonet charge in afghan (think it was) because they ran out of ammo. killed like everyone and took no losses

Excellent paper. I too start off all of my academic assignments with an Offspring song. I refrain from calling places 'assholes of the world' and try to limit the amounts of fucks I put in them though. All together a solid 10/10.

I had been fired from my last job, working as a launch operator at a yacht club after two weeks.
suddenly... the years of anxiety and posturing about middle-class status and being part of a yacht club... it all makes perfect sense

I was fired because when I was hired, I was given a very quick tour of the club that included the security code for the alarm system. I neglected to write down the code, forgot it, and the first night I closed I tried several times to arm it before giving up and riding my bike home. I was fired the next day. Shit happens when you're 18.

I worked for three summers at a different yacht club after I got out of the army as a launch operator. It's fun driving small boats.

it's because they heard your accent and saw your mannerisms and immediately recognized their mistake in recruiting someone from the wrong class, and the wrong part of town. they made their excuses, and set you off, adrift, on your pauper's raft... beating on, your boat against the current of life, destined to be forever borne back ceaselessly into this past.

i think you liked the film better than the book because you fancifully imagine yourself as a gatsby poor-kid-dun-good, but the book labours that whole american dream new-rich parvenu thing with all that tiresome and otiose business about unhappiness, and guilt, and emptiness, and loneliness, and fraud, and inauthenticity... yuck. just show me some rich people having parties and dancing to jay-z!

The movie conveyed his emptiness just as well as the book did, but the book did a better job shredding the Buchanans and their over-reliance on money to shield themselves from the damage they wrought on the world around them. In striving to mimic them, Gatsby became as hollow as them and it ultimately led to his downfall. The message the book tells is that money, and people who have it, are not something to be put up on a pedestal to be worshipped, as the people who have it are just as fucked up as the rest. It's, in a roundabout way, an attack on the idea behind the American Dream.

As a Marxist, I'm sure you adore it.

Ooooh...yeah, most bosses would rather be woken up for an alarm issue than leave their facilities unsecured.
