I think my 8600GT is bottlenecking my Q9550 and 4GB of RAM.

What should I get next?

No ATi cards: I know they already have DX11 and everything but I've had nothing but trouble with their cards lately.

Price range is around 200$

Brand loyalty is retarded when it comes to computer parts. See: Pentium 4
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Yeah, but tbh I am having bad issues with HD5 cards. I think I will move back to NVIDIA as soon as they get Fermi out.

It's not about loyalty, I used to only want ATi a few years ago and THAT was purely loyalty, then I switched to nVidia which worked better than any ATi card I ever owned and I love the control panel, and then they gave me free PhysX acceleration for free a few months later.

Now every ATi card I've seen go into a custom computer in the last few months has not worked at all.

Maybe there's a certain way around it or something, but I don't really care.

Will it fit in a medium tower?

Also the requirements say 525W PSU, which is exactly what my PSU is but is there anything more I need to take into account with that like my other stuff or is my PSU fine?

Make/specs of the PSU?

Btw, I guess I don't need to worry about the size of the case:

I've ran 3 8800GTs off that PSU. A single GTX260 should be absolutely no problem.

I'm running a 9800GX2 in that case. Previously I also had 2 GTX295s in there. A single GTX260 will fit easily

Off topic, but my new job sent me to Nvidia's headquarters here in CA.  It's an impressive compound.  Those guys really have it sweet.

Generally, GPU's don't bottleneck CPU's, it's the other way around.  However, an 8600GT is incredibly underpowered for a system like that.

I'd go with a GTX 285 if I were you, but I can understand budgets.

I've narrowed it down to two cards I'm considering:

EVGA:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814130434

or

PNY:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814133270

From the reviews EVGA seems to have made a bad batch so I'm kind of leaning towards PNY

Sounds good.  I should also be ready for nVidia DX11 cards when they come out then, right?

I wouldn't even consider it, I hate having to do any kind of fabrication, if you could even call that what he did.

lol, that makes it seem like kind of a shame that I'm only going to get a GTX 260.  But $350-something is much too much for me to spend on a graphics card

And for once I feel like I've been complemented on the power of the rest of my machine.  Oh the joys of finally making money and cheap overly powerful hardware.

I love it when people use an item from a certain company, see it's broken, and take that as a representation of every single item of that company, and they also blame the item, and not the user.

Even if it is the user's fault for not knowing what to do, you really shouldn't have to do much more than plug the card into the motherboard for it to do basic display stuff until you get drivers installed, that's the way it's always worked for me.  Now you plug it in and I guess there's some new hidden step I don't know about to get an ATi card to work or something.

And it wasn't just one item, I've seen 3 newer ATi cards do this in the last few months.  That's enough for me not to bother with them anymore.  Makes shopping less time consuming anyway, lol.

Nope, there's no new step. You plug it in, basic display starts, install drivers, reboot, you're good to game.

You must be doing something wrong. Don't blame ATi, blame your lack of intellegence.

I did everything you're normally supposed to do and couldn't get my card or any other working.  Intelligence has nothing to do with it in this case

So its my lack of intelligence too that I am having driver issues with ATi? I have had them with every ATi after X800.

The drivers are bit better than before, but they do lack certain functionality of NVIDIA drivers, especially the control panel. And certainly need heavy fixing for HD5 series atm.
