KMPlayer and MPC-HC are the two best at the moment. VLC is just fail for proper codecs, especially at HD. I continually switch back and forth between preferring one over the other, right now I'm using MPC-HC.
What kind of stuff are you watching with it? If its SD xvid it makes no difference, but once you get into high bitrate and resolutions it can make a world of difference.
All kinds of formats. Sometimes it gets choppy in hd, but not usually. I have both KMPlayer and MPC-HC installed. I'll try them again next time I get a little stutter (which I assumed was from my lappy's mediocre performance).
You should be able to play pretty much anything except the very highest quality 1080p on any laptop made within the past couple years with the proper media player/codecs. Even the new netbooks/tablets with 1.5GHz processors can do it. My laptop is 2 years old and mid-low level yet it can easily play anything I throw at it.
Try installing one of the two with the most recent version and installing CoreAVC 2.x (whatever is latest at the time), its the best codec pack right now. If you still arent able to play it perfectly try coming on IRC, I can show you how to change your video renderer and other settings to be more efficient at HD.
