Aspect ratio question

Good evening,

My PS3 is my Blu-Ray/DVD player which is connected an LG32LH5000. Why is it that sometimes i see a border around the picture? Am i correct in thinking it's the format the film was recorded in? Some Blu-Ray's play full screen, some don't and all DVD's play with a border. I got the PS3 set to 'Full' upscale and of course it's connected via HDMI.

Any suggestions?

Nah it's just about 50 channels we get free in the UK over the airwaves if you have a receiver box.

Baggs, it's all up to the filmmaker. Some render their films in much shorter aspect ratios for reasons only known to them, I see no advantage in it, except perhaps to reduce filesize, or create an effect.. but you've got 50GB on a blu-ray right? And the only effect I get is annoyance.

Yeah tbh, it's fucking annoying when i can't use an entire 32" of 1080p goodness. At least 'Up' played full screen and thats breathtaking.

Yeah animated films are usually correct on aspect to the pixel, because you can easily fuck with that stuff when rendering.

I was thinking of getting a 16:9 monitor, just for the reason I hate letterboxing, but I figured I'm going to get letterboxing no matter what aspect ratio I go.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Movies' aspect ratios are completely up to how they're filmed. Its more common that the movie itself is not full 1080p than it is.

Just let it play at its natural aspect ratio, it looks like shit if you set the screen to fill/stretch to fit (drives me crazy when people do this).

Tbh it doesn't really bother me all that much if I can see the letterboxing or not. Sure, I'd prefer not to have it, but there's nothing you can do if it's there. I'd rather not have it so dark that I can't even see the outline of my monitor. Bad for your eyes having such contrast. One of the reasons I illuminate the wall behind my monitor 24/7.

Why not? When it gets dark in my room, and I'm staring at a bright monitor without light behind it, my eyes get watery and sore and bloodshot. With back lighting, none of the above.

Due to the awesomeness that is the human eye, having the light behind it would make the colours look washed out compared to a dark background.

Ambient Light Technology is a lighting system that actively adjusts both brightness and colour based upon picture content.

It changes colour with the picture to ease eye stress, thats totally different than a solid white light.
