So I bought 2Gb of Kingston Ram to drop in my laptop to give it a much-needed performance boost. (AMD Sempron 2.1Ghz, Vista running on 1gb DDR2 333MHZ ram.)

I dropped the new ram in, but it caused all sorts of problems with an Nvidia graphics driver. Windows kept saying the driver had become unresponsive, then fixed, then sorted, then fixed. It did this a number of times.

I removed the 2Gb dimm, and it seemed to sort itself out again.

But...
When I put the 2Gb chip in the laptop on it's own, it doesn't want to boot past the Windows loading bar. Yet 2+1gb chips allow it to boot, albeit with problems, and the solitary 1Gb chip boots with no problems.

The ram my laptop has is DDR2 333Mhz. The ram I'm trying to put in is 667Mhz. Surely it would just drop down to 333Mhz? I don't see why it is causing problems.

Any help on the issue would be brilliant, as I really want to speed my craptop up.

Is you laptop compatible with that speed of RAM?

it SHOULD downclock itself.  memtest86 homie, worth a shot.  boot to memtest on a usb key or whatever.

your handy to have about aren't you

edit-when you put the larger module in how long are you leaving it on the windows loading screen?

you may have bought dud memory or your motherboard can't handle it, when you put both dimms in the highest downclocks to the lowest dimm. when said higher dimm is installed by its lonesome it doesn't downclock and motherboard can't utilise properly, that how i'm seeing it

if it was dude memory surely it wouldn't boot up at all when it was the only dimm in the laptop?

Errmmm, thats what you would think.  But I've had bad dimms boot but just crash shit.  BUT memtest would pick those errors up, its strange memtest doesnt for you.  What does you BIOS say with just the 2gb dimm? Does it show it at 333mhz?  Maybe your memory controller is having issues downclocking?

have you flashed to the most recent bios version?

Running memtest on the 2gb dimm now. bios was updated when it was getting repaired

the packet the ram came in says:

DDR2 Memroy
200 Pin SO-DIMM

Compatible
800MHz (PC6400)
667MHz (PC5300)
533MHz (PC4200)

I dont see 333mhz on that list man.  Also, who did the repairs?  Can you confirm the bios has been updated.  I thought you ran memtest on teh 2gb already?

rofl did camm seriously just buy RAM that EXPLICITLY STATES on the package that it DOES NOT SUPPORT his original 333MHz stuff?

hahahahaha you seem to be doing silly shit like this all the time lately.

Crap. But wouldn't the ram still work in the laptop? Surely the motherboard isn't limited to 333Mhz?
Also, I didn't JUST buy it, I bought it a day or so after I RMA'd my laptop. And it was half price anyway.

And Sonder, I ran Memtest with both dimms in.

I'm afraid that that RAM wont run stable at that speed. Sell that on the euro equivalent of craigslist and go get some that will work buddy.

so this stuff will not work no matter what? Is it my motherboard limiting it? I can't see how it doesn't work

I didn't realise you could even get 333Mhz DDR2. I though that was a DDR speed. Sounds rather obscure if you ask me, and therefore unlikely to work with more widely used RAM.

your laptop is too slow for the memory, the memory can't think that slow

edit - thank you sonder for making what I said more elegant

I think that the ram is not designed or rated to run at that speed, which causes the stability error.
