Hi guys,
My laptop that I've had for a few months decided today that it won't start up on either battery(full charge) or plugged in. Any suggestions? I was using it last night and it worked just fine. I went to turn it on at the library to get directions to somewhere, and it does nothing when I depress the power button. It is a VAIO EB12FX Core i3 330M, 4GB (Elpida?) DDR3 1066, 500GB 5400rpm HDD, intel GMA HD with the standard (6-cell?) battery. It has worked great up until now, thoiugh I did notice that when I booted into Ubuntu 10.04, the power icon buttton in the menu disappeared and was replaced by a duplicate of my username. I normally use the installed Win 7 Home Premium x64, but occasionally use Linux. The machine went into hibernate when I closed the lid last night, and was perfectly fine as I used it for browsing and downloaded a couple podcasts.

Any ideas would be appreciated

doesn't seem to be, but I thought I heard a slight whir which could have been mine or someone else's computer

1. Remove AC, battery and press, hold the power button 20 seconds. Replace battery, AC and retry.

2. Never let a laptop sleep and the battery run out as it may need this sort of reset to recovery.

3. Try the Fn+Fkey combos that enable or switch display modes.

Will try #1 ASAP

2) The machine was plugged in while I used it last night, only unplugged when I closed it and packed it into my bag to take home after putting in hibernate. The battery should not have powered down in the time the machine was off. afaik Hibernate writes the current info to the HDD and powers the machine, my battery has never been affected by this mode before, while sleep mode does deplete the battery somewhat.

3) Not sure which keys do this, but will make note and try it as well.

@sup

Thanks, that did it. Turns out my sister used while I was out of the house earlier, ran the battery down to 0% charge, and didn't say anything when I said that it wouldn't start. Full capacity is 42180 mWh, it was at 420, lol

I was pretty freaked out. I was thinking that if something had failed randomly, I would get it repaired and sell the damn thing and use the proceeds to get a ThinkPad like I really wanted.
