A rich kid doesn't need a tax-subsidized scholarship.  If a private college wants to hand one out, that's great, but I'm not paying for that shit.
Well I disagree.

Entry to University should be entirely merit based for all students and you or your parents economic situation should not even be a consideration.

On top of that. Why shouldn't a rich kid get a tax subsidised scholarship? They're probably paying more tax then you to start with, why should they be forced to pay for your poor arse and then have to pay for themselves as well?
you mad?  that kid out of high school hasnt paid for shit yet...his parents but not him.
The kid isn't rich then, only his parents.

drunkface you have to realize most of the time when a poor kid applies to harvard they pretty much get a free ride. makes for good PR as well. public colleges are dirt cheap enough and you can apply for grants/FASFA. no one really gets fucked.

The only people I've ever met that really complained about the cost of college are

1) parents who didn't do any research and were surprised when their kid wanted to go to college
2) people paying their own way and wasting time and money because they don't have a clue what they want to do with their life
3) people who have decided that they want to major in something that offers next to zero job prospects when finished. They see a lifetime of $30k a year jobs and no reasonable hope of paying off their loans.

In each of those cases it's their own damn fault.

Yeh, for a small select few. You must have missed the all students. I even bolded the all.

If you make all scholarships a merit based when it just fucks over the poorer students even more.
Not if your school system isn't fucked.

Edit: Drunkface if you're talking about entry, it's all merit and arguably race based. Asians get shafted the most coz they "study harder" and black kids get into colleges a lot easier. my black friend got into SUNY albany with a 2.8 GPA and a 1530 SAT score. shit she even knows she got in coz she black.
You don't see a problem with that? And by entry I also mean a feasible method of actually attending/paying. Getting into Harvard is pointless unless you have a way of paying.
Also GPA and SAT are just meaningless random numbers to me.
Alright, I guess I need to clarify what I meant.

I think the best possible system would involve need-based scholarships that would help smart but poor students to get into college.

As for the poor kids that aren't that smart, they can get one of the lower skilled jobs available on the open market.  That's all they'll probably amount to anyway.

And for the rich kids (the smart ones at least), yeah, there are merit based scholarships available to them -- just like the ones available to smart kids in general.

Rich kids that aren't that smart are already covered by their parents and don't need a scholarship.

It depends on the state.  In NC, some out-of-state students pay less than they would pay for in-state.  This is why NC gets a lot of students from other states and from other countries.  Our tuition rates are dirt cheap compared to a lot of the U.S.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-11829102

Students have staged occupations at universities including Royal Holloway College, Plymouth, Warwick, Birmingham, London South Bank, University College London, Essex, Cardiff and UWE Bristol.

In the iconic Bodleian Library in Oxford, students are planning to hold a "teach-in" as part of the occupation.

In Birmingham, students called on the university authorities to reject what they call a "socially regressive plan that will limit access to education".

Students staging an occupation at University College London said they were protesting against "savage cuts to higher education and government attempts to force society to pay for a crisis it didn't cause".

personally i think this latest 'development' in the movement is all bollocks. camping an extremely valuable picture-gallery at our university and sitting there all night tweeting about your 'revolutionary activity' isn't going to do much about the proposed national-level cuts. aggrieving our poor old principal as if he has anything to do with executive policy making is a fucking joke. it's just silly.

although the same movement did hold up these 2 top officials

but it's a great excuse to meet/pick up chicks and do nasty deeds, which is probably the main reason most people are getting involved in all this...its just all about networking, even when it isn't

A lot of college kids go to university because their parents made them and they don't really have a direction in life, nor do they enjoy what they're studying. They do this kind of shit because it makes them feel important and like they're actually doing something useful with their lives. But more than that, they need to make sure everyone else knows that they're doing this and it'll be a waste if no one else knows about it.
These are the kind of kids whose only goal in high school was to be popular and have become disillusioned with how the real world actually works.

i'd say that the average student profile of the cat that camped our founders building was the socially awkward, not-so-popular yet 'active' student. you know, the busy-bodies that love feeling important by getting involved with the student union, on-campus societies, events, 'politics' (whatever that excuse for a 'popularity' contest is called), and so on. it's definitely not a bunch of trendy cats having an impromptu party in the principal's quarters. we're all at the bar, laughing.

funny really how 'establishment' they are, as well as everything about their background/lives...

but they sure do like to play anarchists!
