I hear that the new iPhone will offer wireless tethering.  Of course Jobs will declare it a new innovation.
iOS 4.3 will have it but only on the iPhone 4 so far, maybe on the 2nd generation iPad too but I haven't heard anything about that.  Verizon iPhones are supposed to have Wifi tethering from the get-go with the version 4.2.5 that they're going to ship with, but apparently it already has bugs in it that they're fixing in 4.3, all this according to the iOS version history page on wiki:

I thought the 3GS was also getting the tethering... wow, talk about leaving your customers in the dust.

Apple has pretty good support for their existing customers. Most companies continue to innovate with the hopes of selling new products.
Consumers are easily distracted by new shiny things, and quickly forget how they were treated as past customers. Right or wrong, I think that is the reality of it.

The 3G is no longer really supported, though. Recall reading a quote from a press release saying something to that effect...

If true that is ridiculous.

Thank god for free-market laws here!

But if apple didn't want to the wouldn't have to sell a damn thing to you. In fact, Apple having to make the move to verizon also is exactly the way a free market works (consumers demand it). It would seem this is a "right to choose" success story, albeit three years late. OFC I'd like to see the abilty to unlock more phones here in the states.. but I doubt we'd be getting phones subsidized anything like $600 going for $100. It would just be too much of a risk for carriers. We already have to deal with bs termination fees.

I was referring to the fact that such a marketing scheme is against the law here... which is why apple came through with the iPhone so late...

Here you can buy any phone you want as hardware (no subscriptions) and chose whichever subscription you want and by law you can only be tied to it as long as 6 months...

Or you can buy crossovers of the two where you basically pay off on the phone for the 6months you are tied to the dealer...

I know. It's against the law in most of the free world. The shit they pull over here is unbelievable.

I am curious tho.. how much these phones cost you? The primary reason for locking people to a carrier here is so they don't get screwed because of the subsidized phone. Obviously they make it up in the long term.

If you buy a phone with NOTHING what-so-ever in the form of commitment (or network functionality untill you buy a subscription) something like an Xperia x10mini will cost ~1800 DKK which is just about $325 (keep in mind all tech is more expensive over here)

Get it with a subscription and you can get it for as low as 1 DKK, but eventually you will end up paying for the phone over those 6 moths, you can save some money if you buy a fitting subscription rather than the cheapest phone price tho'

e.g. I got my i780 with a subscription that dropped in price every 6 months, now I pay next-to-nothing for unlimited SMS, MMS, normal call, internet & dial-up price

I do think the only way the phone companies over there get away with the rediculous crimes to man is because they have HUGE areas to cover if they want to say they have "100% coverage" like most companies here can....

Ideally, here, I'd like to see them drop the early termination fees at just let us pay whatever is left on a discounted phone.

I'm trying to compare apples to apples (pun intended). http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08 … nmark.html
Outdated article tho. I'd like to see some current pricing.

It's not true.

All products are supported for 5 years from launch, then classed as obsolete and not supported anymore. The 3G is only half way through its support life cycle.

Not all iOS4 features work on the 3G, but that's very different to it no longer being supported.
