Apparently Mubarak has about U$70bn stashed around the world so I reckon he'll be pretty comfy running away.
I think thats the exact amount of aid the US has given Egypt.

Near enough, give or take a few billion here and there.

Sorry I'm late to the game, is the U.S. backing the dictator in this case or supporting the rebellion?

Of course they back Mubarek.  The leadership is well off.  Now the grunts?  That may be a different story.

@jsnipy... Bamster backs the uprising, I don't.

Db I worry about our leadership more than egypts.

jsnip .. that's weird. I figured I would be getting all sorts of breaking news alerts if he stepped down (immediately) He has agreed to not run again. Maybe that is what your friends was trying to convey.

So, who's up next. The big one fell. Although the big, relative paper tiger who was on life support with the US. Good luck with the tyrants who rule with nobodies help (Gaddafi etc)

You know it was actually funny to watch the dance unfurl with this situation. Neither the conservatives nor democrats took an absolute position on this at first. But as Obama started to lean more towards the protestors we saw an equal amount of diametrically opposed conservatives shift to an opposite view in the media. I saw these views filter down through the typical subscribers as they regurgitated them across the blogosphere and social networks. The vast majority of americans don't give a flying Fuck about what happens in egypt. They'd rather be perceived as right, even if it meant that whole country burned to the ground. It's the ugliest form of narcissism there is. Good luck finding people to admit it though. Especially here.

The bamster is the definition of narcissism.  However, I think he was way behind the rest on this issue.  He was busy with a going away dinner party, followed by a superbowl party while the SOS (Hildo) was on vacation.   He was rightly slammed for not being on board with the Iranian uprising issue though.    But why would he support one revolution of 'freedom' and not the other?  Every now and then he shows his colors and proclaims his true allegiances.

I guarantee you the average American doesn't give a flying fuck about that region -just as much as the talking heads are dying to be right (as usually the case).  Were you veiled asking me if I care or would rather be right?  Personally, "fuck egypt and fuck that entire stone aged mentality, barbaric region" I could care less about them and hope Israel cleans their clocks if necessary.  However, I do care about the manipulative sons-a-bitches that use the guise of religion to enlist/brainwash people into 'jihad'.   I don't want any of them, anywhere on this planet and that's why I 'care' about Egypt.

The players in the region will hold on to power until the last gasp.  Look at Mubarak in Egypt - he tried to hold on to power at all costs, only relinquishing the throne (but still promoting his inner circle cronies to positions of power) as a last-ditch effort.  Look at the actions by Kind Abdullah II in Jordan - a shakeup of the parliament and a few concessions.  A toss of breadcrumbs from the power elite to the poor, inept masses.  The people aren't crying for Mubarak to step down, the people are crying for regime change, an end to corruption.  This isn't a regime change any more than Saddam stepping down and promoting Uday would have been.  I think it's similar to the struggles of independence in Central and South America, just a bit more dynamic due to the geopolitical significance of the region.

It (the Tunisian/Egyptian/Jordanian) people's movement is a major step for the region and it's very interesting to be able to see it played out in the various forms of media.  It's especially interesting to see how it's covered in the major media of the region such as al-jazeera as opposed to the Western media.

Behind the rest? Who was leading the charge, and what was that message? Actually it would seem the primary message was the same in both revolts from Obama. A rather boring keep it peaceful position. Name me a politician that isn't a self promoting narcascist. Please. That goes for any so called talking head as well. I never understood how so many people can be so eagerly trusting of political commentators whilst maintaining that the government is out to get them. Talking heads openly and absolutley maintain their opinions for personal gain.

After seeing the president talk about moving to a more fiscally responsible budget and then seeing him berated for doing so by the typical right wing pundints, I really don't give a crap about what they say. They prefer to, in their mind, rub his nose in it .. instead of embracing the policy. Save the clap trap. I have heard the whole "but he was spending a lot early on" mantra. Their positioning is so predictable and juvenile. So tell me, what is the point of paying any mind to those people? If his every move has been completely decided upon prior to making it, even when those moves are agreeable, what's the point? It is obviosly no win.

The same goes for foreign policy. Americans need to grow the fuck up and stop treating real world life and death geopolitical situations like a daytime soap opera. Oh yea, we're real concerned about Egypt so long as it temporarily helps us maintain the entertainment value of the current news cycle. Pretty soon the cheese is going to slide off the cracker and we will stop caring enough to even mention it.
See Burma and Georgia for references.

Well shit, I guess Mubarak's offer of September wasn't so bad after all

back to the drawing board!

I guess it's all about trust, they'd rather have this than "wait until september, bro i'll totally find my own place by then i swear"
