Hi all, I thought I might post a new topic about what books you have read or suggest others read to help them to play both Battlefield and other War strategy based games. I find that sometimes just a little bit of reading can help to drastically change your attitudes but also helps to get kick ass scores. I you play the Civ games then you really should read number 1 at least.

1. "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu. Its about 2,500 years old now and is essentially one of the first ever books on military strategy. Its not the be all end all guide to strategy(they didn’t have arty or air power back then), but it has some wonderful chapters on motivation and attitude. These can be very important for commanders and squad leaders. It also lays out some very simple ideas that are still valid today. Buy the book and keep it at home. Some of the lessons on attitude can also extend out into your real life.

2. "Tactics of the Crescent Moon" by John H Poole. Great new book that outlines some of the small arms tactics that have been used by partisan and rebel fighters in modern conflicts. It is also a fascinating read on insurrectionist tactics and modern guerrilla warfare. It also covers the basics of terrorism and why we have moved into 4th generational warfare.

3. "On War" Carl von Clausewitz. This is a must read for any serious armchair general. This is one of the more famous texts on military thinking and uses. Written during some of the bloodiest of the European Wars(think Napoleon) it is important both as a tactical manual but also as a introduction on "Why we fight" as Clausewitz's definition of war is still referred to today.

Buy a book, have a read, and improve your game. I strongly suggest the top two for anyone new to computer gaming or who really wants to improve their strategy gaming.

Here is one.  Starship Troopers, by Robert Heinlein.  The BOOK, not the movie.  It is the only science ficiton book on the U.S. Army officer's recomended reading list.  It presents the concepts of duty, responsibility to troops, morality of the use of force, and reasons to fight.

I don't read to improove my Battlefield experiance, I read to improve my reading experiance. Not all things are related to BF2 you know.

I'd suggest "Black Hawk Down" though. That's just a cool book.

Great Books peeps. I totally agree, and own both.

Starship troopers is fantastic but don’t take all of it seriously as it has been interperated by many as a very clever attempt to justify Fascism. That being sad, I love the film, have 2 copies of the book(one for me, one for others), the posters, the cards, and have played the game. The game by BlueTongue is based more on the book than the movie was.

Black Hawk Down is great and makes a great read if you enjoyed the film. (The bits where the Rangers had to shoot live goats to practice their emergency medic skills was a vivid image).

If you play Civilisation and other type sim games then try "The Prince" by Machiavelli. Essential reading for any demagogue, tyrant or aspiring benevolent person of the people. IT was sort of the Idiots guide to being a king in the 16th Century.
