sorry for the n00b question, but i have always just dismissed stat-padding as i thought, 'i will never do it, whatever it is'.

But now curiosity has got the better of me and i wanna know what the hell it actually is...

Cheers lads

Or just click here.

http://forums.bf2s.com/search.php

Then Type Stat padding.  It will result in this page.

There are 31 pages worth of threads.  Knock yourself out.

If you follow this advice, you'll be a lot more popular on these forums.

Cheers.

Hi.
Taken from EA:-
EA cracks down on Battlefield 2 stat-padding Knives and pistols at dawn (or at any time, for that matter) could get you kicked from ranked servers of EA's online FPS.

In the world of online gaming, where many view levels and rankings as the final word on what a person's existence is worth, it's all too common to find gamers exploiting whatever bugs, loopholes, or design oversights they can find in order to get a leg up on the competition and some cold, hard evidence of superiority as a life-form.

One recent example is a rash of stats-padding instances in Electronic Arts' online first-person shooter Battlefield 2. An e-mail sent to ranked server providers earlier this week from EA employee Colin Clarke (a primary tester on Battlefield 2) addressed the issue. "We have noticed an increase in behavior where leased servers are being used by clans solely to pad players' stats," Clark wrote, "even to the extent where clans are institutionalizing rules that forbid normal play."

The exploit du jour is to set up a ranked server and advertise informal rules where players use only knives and pistols and revive each other while not taking flags. The end result is that this gameplay style accumulates statistics kept by the game at a greater rate than normal play. This makes players rise in rank more quickly, which in turn gives them quicker access to the game's unlockable weapons and a greater priority when multiple players vie for the commander position in a game.

Clarke says that creates an imbalance in the ranked server playing field and cites it as a violation of the game's terms of service. As a result, EA is taking action against the offenders involved. Anyone caught on such a server will have his or her stats stripped, and accounts sharing that person's clan tag will be examined for anomalous stats.

So I guess setting up a server that only allows certain weapons is stat padding? So going on that same line I would think not allowing opposing teams to steal enemy vehicles, base rape, and or spawn camp uncapable flags is also a form of stat padding, in so far as it doesn’t allow the opposition to use all tactics to defeat the enemy, thus modifiy the game play.

I don't understand why everybody gets so bitchy when people post the same topics over again? Just answer their question and move on, no need to sound like a complete jackass.

I don't give out negative karma for questions.  Stupid statements, yes, but not questions.

The reason I personally don't like it when people start a new thread on the same stuff over and over again is that I come to these forums (or any forum for that matter) to see new and interesting stuff.  I like to learn.  I don't like to wade through a hundred repetitive questions or topics that have been answered or beaten to death.  My question to you would be why don't people try to find the information by searching before they just start a new thread?   I think it's laziness.

The thing that used to drive me nuts was when the mods here went on and on about people who didn't search but they never put any consequence behind it.  Personally I'd have warned everyone and then started handing out three day bans if the main text of your question would have brought up an answer if it had been entered in the Search.  The same goes for rants about the top 10 players.  I'd ban the next guy that posts a thread about them and delete the post.  People would learn pretty quick.  Fortunately the mods don't seem to bitch about it as much, though I'd argue it's as much a problem as it has ever been, if not more so.

Anyway, my question to you still stands, FrankieSpankie3388.

Chuckles, the search function is just that, a tool that allows people to comb through thousands of posts to find specific information in a short period of time.  To say that someone should search before posting is crazy.  It is encouraged that you search but it’s not required.  Your idea of temporarily banning someone for not searching based on what is in the main text or even in the title is too subjective and people will find ways around it.  Once you start limiting people's ability to post questions or comments you set up the possibility of turning people away.

I understand you want to see new and interesting stuff but what would you rather see?  Another post about the top 10 players that has been discussed over and over or a brand spanking new post about what your favorite flavor of ice cream is.

Don't answer because it really doesn't matter because you still have a choice...to open or not to open the post.  Frankly, if you open the post and begin to type, try to have something insightful or helpful to say rather than look like a tool and basically say..."hey champ....it called SEARCH...give it a try".

Really?  It's crazy to try to do something for yourself before asking for help?  Do you really mean that?  I guess I don't think it's too much to ask.  I can't tell you how many times I've been able to paste the key words in someone's question in the search tool, press the button, and the thread that has the answer is right there.  It's often even stickied.

I'll agree with you on one point though.  I should have said "start a new thread" instead of posting.  That's my bad, and I'll correct it shortly.  I don't think you should have to search before you post (though it's not a bad idea if you're going to ask a question).  I still stand by my sentiment though when it comes to new threads.

I don't agree that it's too subjective.  If the main text of a thread title or question when input into the search tool brings up the appropriate thread on the first page I don't think that is too much of a burden of proof that someone didn't really search.  And if you turn away people that constantly ask questions they could find the answer to themselves or start new threads on topics that have been flogged to death, I say good riddance.

And my main point there was intended to be more an expression of disappointment at the mods that were constantly saying "use the search" as opposed to actually doing something about it.  I just offered a suggestion as to what I'd do.  I hate it when people constantly complain about things but never actually do anything about it themselves.

Neither.  I'd ban that type of stuff too.
