Chuckles, the search function is just that, a tool that allows people to comb through thousands of posts to find specific information in a short period of time. To say that someone should search before posting is crazy.
Really? It's crazy to try to do something for yourself before asking for help? Do you really mean that? I guess I don't think it's too much to ask. I can't tell you how many times I've been able to paste the key words in someone's question in the search tool, press the button, and the thread that has the answer is right there. It's often even stickied.
I'll agree with you on one point though. I should have said "start a new thread" instead of posting. That's my bad, and I'll correct it shortly. I don't think you should have to search before you post (though it's not a bad idea if you're going to ask a question). I still stand by my sentiment though when it comes to new threads.

Your idea of temporarily banning someone for not searching based on what is in the main text or even in the title is too subjective and people will find ways around it. Once you start limiting people's ability to post questions or comments you set up the possibility of turning people away.
I don't agree that it's too subjective. If the main text of a thread title or question when input into the search tool brings up the appropriate thread on the first page I don't think that is too much of a burden of proof that someone didn't really search. And if you turn away people that constantly ask questions they could find the answer to themselves or start new threads on topics that have been flogged to death, I say good riddance.
And my main point there was intended to be more an expression of disappointment at the mods that were constantly saying "use the search" as opposed to actually doing something about it. I just offered a suggestion as to what I'd do. I hate it when people constantly complain about things but never actually do anything about it themselves.

I understand you want to see new and interesting stuff but what would you rather see? Another post about the top 10 players that has been discussed over and over or a brand spanking new post about what your favorite flavor of ice cream is.
Neither. I'd ban that type of stuff too.
