I might ask my parents to get me this instead of the X-Fi Extrememusic for Christmas.  Reviews on Newegg look pretty good but I need more opinions from more educated people.  Note that this is the version without the useless CD port thing, so it is just the card and CDs.

So what should I do?

If you get your rebate, it's not that much more expensive than an XtremeMusic. By all means, go for that card (Fatal1ty), if you're going for X-Fi. Just hope you have good sound output to enjoy the quality.

Oh, and make sure you have the newest drivers from Creative ready and waiting for installation.

Yes, I have it. I got it for the front I/O drive box mostly, as it was on offer at almost the same price as the X-Fi Platinum - as well as being bundled with some pretty good Creative headphones.
The I/O drive has its uses, it certainly makes using headphones a lot more convenient. The card itself is barely any different to the the Music or Platinum versions, with the exception of a red light and "X-RAM". Damned if I can see any performance difference with it on or off, but still the idea is pretty neat.

As a whole, the X-Fi range is spectacular for sound quality, however the XtremeMusic version would do most people.
However, if you have any intention of using headphones (playing games while on Teamspeak) then the Front I/O drives of the Platinum and Fatality become useful, as well as for allowing you to hook up all kinds of digital analog inputs such as optical in, MIDI or record players etc to record music. Also, if your a gamer, and its not too much extra the Fatality is the one to get if you need the functionality of an I/O drive.

As I said though, the Music version is still the most useful one of the lot and also the cheapest.

Note: They recently updated the X-Fi range, I think they now sell the Fatality without the I/O drive (XtremeGamer or something?), so check when your buying.

Did you have any specific questions??

The one that I linked to is one without that I/O drive.  I don't need it and it makes it way too expensive.  It turns out that after today, the rebate is no longer in effect and as I have said before, I can't count on my parents to ever give me anything over 200$ per christmas and I also wanted the G15 keyboard and maybe a gaming mouse too.  Looks like i'll have to get the XtremeMusic.  I suppose it would be a massive improvement over this Ensoniq ES1370, aka Sound Blaster PCI 64/128.  It's so old that it was one of the first sound cards ever made for the PCI slot according to wikipedia.  Scroll down the page and you'll find that it was quite a card for it's time.  It looks like getting an X-Fi of some sort will allow me to play BF2142 with 4x the voices.

Awesome, it's 6:45 A.M. on the U.S. east coast, sure enough they've stopped the rebate for the fatal1ty, but they have just started a rebate for the XtremeMusic that makes it cheaper than the Audigy 2 ZS.  See here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6829102188

Looks like that will be the one.

Seems to vary from system to system. I've mostly seen it affect certain MP3's. I suppose if you don't want the hassle, an Audigy 2 ZS might be worth it, but you'd miss out once it all gets patched away.

dont think patches will help, creative are blaming nvida, nvidia say they know nothing about it... hardware wise it seems to be a pci bus timing issue and affects quite a few people...i never had problems till I went sli and now it sucks the big one

seriously considering going back to onboard sound (ac97 boo) and tying the Xfi to a brick so I can launch it through one of creative UKs windows.

Luckily I don't use nVidia, lol.
