Here we go again with the Russia vs. Chechnya skirmish.

The RIA news agency said the helicopter was shot down by Chechen rebels during a Russian operation, according to a Reuters report.

It said a gunfight was raging at the scene of the crash between insurgents and Russian forces.

Chechnya is an autonomous republic in southwestern Russia, in the Caucasus Mountains region and has long fought for its independence. Years of conflict have taken a heavy toll on Chechnya's infrastructure and people. Fighting has damaged buildings, killed thousands and displaced half a million Chechen people
So do you think the Chechnian situation could erupt once more into a full fledged war?  One thing is for sure, unless there is some major attack on innocent Russian civilians, nothing President Putin does is going to look good in the press.

Would that start like the third Chechen War, besides I'm starting to wonder how many helicopters have been shot down there, I still remember hearing of the Mi-26 that got shot down and then crashed into a minefield killed something like 90 people. Then again it wouldn't really surprise me if the Russians opened up on them, they don't take too kindly to the Chechens.

There have actually been two Chechen wars over the course of the past 15 years or so.  During the first Chechnya gained partial independence when Boris Yeltsin ended the war after it seemed Russia would be unable to re-gain control.  The Second Chechen War actually brought the country back under Russian control and established a pro-Russian local government.  But with most things Russian, the local government is but a puppet and the vast majority of the populous still wants independence. 

You still hear of skirmishes here and there, such as the Chechen school being gassed by Putin after some rebels  holed up in the building.  Every few months or so you will here of a helicopter going down or a transport coming under attack but the Russian propaganda machine usually plays these events off as "technical problems that led to a crash" or "random and sporadic extremist attacks".  The truth is that the entire country is still trying to gain independence.  I'm just waiting for the third Chechen War to break off.

Way to go Chechnya. I just pre-emptively feel sorry for them for the absolute mauling they'll now receive from the Russians. Freedom for Chechnya!

well i think both sides are to blame for this mess. what does Russia really get out of controlling Chechnya? I mean is that country that valuable?

I never even knew where it was until not that long ago, Grozny is virtually leveled so I don't actually think there's anything for the Russians to claim. P.S does anyone actually know its value?

That, and the fact Russia has the "Macho Syndrome" and that mind set is extremely stressed due to all the old countries leaving the Motherland.  I'm sure the Russian government looks at Chechnya just as much like "What would the rest of the world think of us if we can't control a tiny 15,000 km hillbilly state" just as much as "If we lose Chechnya we be fucked on our oil reserves".

If there is a third war, Chechnya is screwed.  Putin will not back down and sign a peace treaty again like Yeltsin did.  We will see the next Russian-Afghan type war before that happens.

I'd say Russia is like an old boxing champion that's seen his hayday come and go and is now trying not to get beat up in the street by a 16 year old kid and made to look the fool.

Stuff like this always confuses me. Why don't Russia just let them have their independace. Why does the U.S care so much about Iraq. Why do Pakistan and India want Kashmir so much.

All the places i mentioned really have little value, what's the point in fighting so much for them. The countries i mentioned (that are fighting for these lands) would be much better off focusing on more important things and just letting them have what they want instead of ruining everything by fighting for it.

Russia would be better off with an independant Chechnya, U.S would be better off leaving Iraq, and since Kashmir is a muslim state, just let Pakistan have it and honestly who gives a shit they'd be better off without it and without the trouble.

The failure of their nation is no concern of yours. They have the right to be a failure (or success as the case may be) through how they run their own affairs, which they should be entitled to do.  93% of the population are native Chechen, they speak Chechen, practice Islam: they're NOT Russian - let them free for Christ's sake!
