Hey

Just wondering if anyone else here had this happen to them.

Only just 2 days ago i bought a new Asus 8800GTS 320mb version.

I used it for about 4 hours with an average load temperature of 85 degrees (which apparently is normal) then everything just turned off (my computer that is).

It wouldn't start up. The only way to get a peep out of it was to unplug wait 10 seconds then plug back in again, hit the power button then both HDD light and power light would light up for half a second then I'd need to unplug again.
After doing that a few times i started to smell something.... So ripped the cord outta the wall just in case.
Took out the GPU gave it a sniff... burnt.

This thing died only 2 weeks after my 7900GS died.
What luck

My suspicions for the death of both cards is either heat or maybe my 12V rail is faulty.
My 7900GS idled over 50 degrees which was suspected to be hot, although my gut feeling tells me they forgot to apply the thermal paste.
8800GTS seemed to be normal heat as well so what else could it be?

I have a Antec P180B with all the stock fans as well as a new FOX 1 Sucker that sits in the PCI slot and extracts the hot air coming off the graphics card straight outta the case. (Sits above my X-Fi card).

Now i have a 7100 sitting in here thanks to the shop i bought my computer from who've sent off my Leadtek 7900GS for repair (2-3 weeks... that's just 1-2 weeks to go). Now my brand new 8800GTS died and i'm yet to find out what's gonna happen with that (shop i bought it from was closed on Sunday).

Anyone else have any similar problems/happenings?

Yep, replace that PSU before you put another good card in. I'd recommend:

Hmm it's odd actually because the PSU is relatively new (as is my entire computer). Was bought at around Christmas last year.

I've got an Antec NewHE 2.2 500W but i'll look into another one.

Thanks guys

Yeah, my PSU just crapped out on me aswell. Got the burning smell followed by my computer shutting down completely. had no abnormal temps as far as CPU and GFX card were concerned, just wont boot up when i press the button.

The only other thing it might be is a faulty motherboard. The fact that you fried two cards seems odd, usually a faulty power supply won't actually fry one component, it either just dies or fries the motherboard.

That's hot?  My 7600GS runs at 75 degrees celcius while idling.

god that sucks, but I know how that feels. When I got my x1900xt it burned out on the first test run. The exhaust was blocked by some sort of tape and the card just literally fried. At least there is always RMA. BTW NewHE PSUs are not exactly known for their good quality.
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

ok thanks for the posts.

Situation update.

It would appear that i'm going to get a 8800GTS replacement (exact same card).

Now to avoid another *boom* what would you advise i do?
I'm thinking of buying a PSU tester (PC Case Gear have one) and go from there.

I've elimated heat out of the question but brought up the motherboard into the picture but i guess i'll take this one step at the time and just get the PSU tester first. Even if i have both my 7900GS and 8800GTS here while i'm still testing, i'd rather have a working computer than have to send the 2 cards off again.

If a new PSU needs to be bought, maybe a... 500W Seasonic?

500W Seasonic sounds like a good call.
