I'm actually not so worried about Turkey. I was in Istanbul last year and the place seemed to me to be Europe with Mosques. Men and women held hands in the street, locals drank beer and got wasted, consumerism was at the fore: I don't think Erdogan is as bad as the Turkish military are making out. In the constitution laid out by the father of Turkey and that bastion of secularity, Kemal Ataturk, the military will (and have in the past) step in to depose any government that tries to subvert the secular nature of the country. That aside, Erdogan has been in power for a while and he hasn't exactly been indulging in Taliban like governmental policy.

And..................?  They had a majority before, too.  It's if they get the presidency that you should worry (which is unlikely due to the military).

From the article:
The nomination sparked massive protests from Turks who feared the AKP would attempt to turn Turkey into an Islamic state. It also elicited a warning from Turkey's military -- which has seized power from civilian governments three times and pushed out a forerunner of the AKP in the 1990s -- that it would step in if necessary to protect the republic's secular tradition.

The Turkish army absolutely has the obligation to remove the Government from power if they are starting to rule from a religious standpoint. I had been out in Diyarbakir in 2002 when they took a majority and there was a lot of very serious talk among our LNOs (Local National Observers) about what will happen if they get to wacko religious and it would be very quick and possibly messy depending.

I was just in Istanbul for vacation not too long ago myself.. man.. had a great time. BUT Istanbul does not equal the rest of Turkey it is soo very different from the rest of the country.

I concur totally from my time in the great Thanksgiving Bird, the locals take a lot of pride and have a lot of funny anecdotes relating to attempted religious takeovers of the government, and how "accidental" tank columns misdirected through the middle of down town magically make the Islamists shut up.  Western Turkey is a lot like modern Europe, and Eastern Turkey where I spent most of my time I would compare to rural West Virginia (taking their religiosity just as seriously but not moreso).

German Turks, which seem to set the Turkish reputation in Europe, are a bit of a joke to "real Turks", being far more nationalistic and "backward" for not living in their home country for some extremely odd reason.

Exactly Cam. Istanbul is practically an exception in Turkey, and so are the cities along the Aegean shoreline which benefit from tourism. If you were to go to the mainland, you'd see that people live very different lives. It's like they're 300 years back...

but that is just istanbul and some other citys with western influence.

judging by that would be like visiting st.petersburg and talking about the people in siberia.

turkey needs to improve a lot more to join europe.

I don't know, but it doesn't seem to be a reliable country, since they did what we all know to Armenians, and didn't learn a shit coz they want to do the same to kurds.  I wouldn't allow them to join the EU.

Don't forget the Pontic and Assyrian genocides which haven't even been officially recognized like the Armenian one.

ok. drop your pants and search for your foreskin.

many americans still believe, that there is a need to circumsize... even when there is no medical need in it at all. look at the majority /millions of europeans, who do not ever get any problems with their foreskin. but out of old traditions and irrational believes, you still cut of a functioning part of the genitals...

He's talking about Circumcision. Which isn't really mutilation but it still makes me cry.

Anyway here's hoping they do try to become Islamist. So that the Turkish army step in and bust some Jihady heads. The news has been boring lately.

Hate to break it to you, but the foreskin is on the penis, not the genitals.

the penis belongs to your genitals, as it is part of your primary genitalia...

Ya and last time I checked there was not an outcry to stop circumcision.
