The only things stopping me at the moment are;

1) A download limit of 40 gig a month
2) The contract is TWO years!
3) I'm not sure if the "free" laptop is any good...or whether they're just trying to get rid of old stock from Dell.

They're throwing in a (supposedly) free laptop to attract new customers but is it a good one? The other fact I think I ought to state are that my Internet usage includes daily browsing, Skype (including webcam) chats of about an hour or 2 per day, one 700mb movie every week or so, a regular amount of gaming, and last but not least, Internet radio usage of anything between 2 to 5hrs per day.

There are 3 things that interest me regarding wot's on offer;

1) The cheaper price plan (£5 less than wot I'm currently paying with BT - British Telecom)
2) A better customer/technical support service than BT - that's wot I've heard from other forum members who use AOL
3) The free laptop of course - assuming it's a good one or the package more than compensates for the 2yr contract.

So wot do you guys think about it? Worth changing over to AOL? Or is it a complete waste of time?

Would you kindly care to elaborate why and how they'll screw me over. And is AOL's service the same in the UK as it is over where you are?

1) A download limit of 40GB is ridiculous. I use that in 4 days easily. 40GB/month = 1.3 gigs a day which is nothing
2) 2 Years? hell that is long
3) the laptop is crap
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

True, but I wouldn't be using the laptop for gaming as it's evidently poor for that kinda thing. It'll probably be used for something like Uni work/assignments/projects, watching the odd movie or two, stuff like that.

Well, my experience with them (in the US) was terrible. Random drop-outs, some days the internet wouldn't work at all, and their customer support sucked. That just about sums it up.

40gig is nothing. I can burn that in a few days.

I'm with PulseGaming abd have the Pulse8000pro package.
8mb and I get the full 8, 300 gig fair usage during peak times, unlimited after 8pm.
Best provider I've ever had.

Is it only that 1 laptop that will be on the internet?

I've used 30gig in the last 3 weeks, on 1 laptop- we have 5 PC's in the house, so i dread to think what our usage is each month.

my laptop is on pretty much 24/7- Radio 1 is streaming from 4pm to 10pm, IRC is on 24/7, browsing the web for 3 hours a day.

Eyup pal, yeah it looks fine to me that deal, a 40GB usage which will easily last you all month, if your not on all day downloading porn like most of these people on here by the sounds of it.
I'd go for it m8.

2 desktops being used at the moment - mine and my bro's

Our Internet usage would be something like this;
1-2hrs on Skype (including webcam usage) during weekdays, jumping to about 3hrs (per day that is) over the weekend.
A movie off torrent per week or fortnight - size: about 700MB
4-5hrs of Internet Radio per day
Regular browsing just like everybody else
On average about 10MB of songs per day along with watching a few videos on Youtube
One game per month off torrent: Est. 10gig
Oh, and about 2hrs of gaming per day

SHITE, that's quite a bit now that I've looked at it. I don't notice my usage cos my current package is unlimited.

As for the laptop - assuming I wos to go for it - would probably be given away as an Xmas present to be used at another place other than mine.

My brother's on AOL, and he's plagued by the 40gb a month limit, if you go over the limit for a few months and then stay under the limit, they tend to just cut your bandwidth anyways, and it's a 4 or 5 day battle to get your regular speeds back.

Only go with it if you don't plan to download a lot.

I've got it and when it breaks it fucking sucks. You can't find there number anywhere,the error message says something like "Go to AOL keyword connection for info on how to reconnect" . Well how the fuck can I go to AOL keyword connection when it won't fucking connect?! Then if you do get the number they'll transfer you between 4 people over a 20 minute period in the hope that you give up and they don't actually have to help you. And yes if you ring AOL you have a 99% chance of speaking to someone in India who just learnt English by watching old Scooby Doo episodes 3 days prior to getting the job.

Fuck you, AOL customer support manager. I'm coming for your kids.

True, and the other BIG issue is that I'd be tied down for TWO bloody years - and A LOT can happen during that time! I think I need to find out wot my usage has been over the past few months before making any decision. Apparently one's ISP can provide such info.

BTW, is AOL's (UK) technical/customer service/support any good???
