I searched only briefly, but I just want a really short answer:

Is it possible to play Bf2 on DX10 with a DX10 card?

It's a DX9 game.

second question then:
Is there a way to run Dx9 with vista and an 8600?

It'll run fine.

edit: DX10 cards work fine with DX9 programs.

Well it doesn't. I'm trying to help a friend here, and he hasn't gotten it to work yet.

Maybe he needs to fix his graphics drivers?

I'm using a Radeon HD 3850 on XP 64-bit and it runs just fine.

but you're not running DX10, are you?

I will only believe it works if someone else who is running Vista, with a DX10 card tells me it can be done.

Ah ok, now I understand your question. I do have friends who play BF2 on Vista, but I'm not sure they're running DX10. If no one answers this question by the time SP1 for Vista comes out, I'll give it a shot and let you know (once SP1 is out, I'm switching to Vista).

And to Shadow: I doubt it. The 2600's are known for their massive power consumption. (I think the whole 2xxx series is, IIRC).
As a matter of fact, don't bother with the 2xxx series. Get a x1950 Pro, or just move up to the HD 39xx series. (Not much more $)

I have run BF2 and other DX9 games successfully with an 8800GTS 640MB in Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit.

I used to play BF2 and 2142, not to mention x number of other DX9 games on 32-bit Vista Ultimate with an 8800GTS 320MB perfectly.

Drivers, drivers and more drivers is my solution.

I don't know. I just put it in, installed drivers, and it worked. I guess you should make sure he has the right drivers for the OS he is on. I think Vista has different drivers for 32 and 64 bit.

"Update DX9 in Vista, as unless you have a DX10 card and a DX10 programmed game, you will only be using Vista's DX9."

DirectX9.0c Web Installer

I have also read that it can be a graphics driver issue or the card itself might be going bad...?

and BF2 wasn't designed for DX10 so it won't look any different with DX10...

that means BOTH the card AND the game? because the card is DX10... I know the game isn't. Anyway, thanks for the help, we'll try it out and I'll get back to you.

Not the card. The fact that it is DX10 only means that it can handle DX10 graphics, not that it is excluded from previous versions.

I can run BF2 on 64x Vista without any problems.
Changed it to XP SP2 compatability though.

I heard it was supposed to be coming out in January. But I'm willing to bet it'll be delayed until February or March.

Vista comes with DX10.  DX9 games run just fine on Vista.  I run BF2 on both XP Pro and Vista x64 Ultimate.

You can get the release candidate for SP1 now, and everything seems to be running just fine for me with it.

It runs fine.

I've done it on numerous systems, no issues whatsoever. Doubt it's driver related, all the nVidia drivers for DX10 cards have run BF2 fine in Vista for me, and it should run through D3D9EX which is a part of D3D10 - so no DX updates required.
