the scene with smith dicking around on the road while the rabid doggies pretty much ruined the whole movie. pretty bad when they have to create unnecessary tension to advance the plot. the whole crawling thing, without his m4 was just fucking stupid.

I watched a stream of the movie off the Internet (high quality leak, was only up for a few hours... saved to hard-drive anyway) and was impressed with it as a Hollywood movie. As far as blockbusters go, this is pretty much spot on. Grandiose storyline, epic setting, massive production costs, a fantastic lead actor, the odd interspersed moments of action and big bangs to keep the action-genre lovers happy, and a deeper more thoughtful theme.
But, the only reason I was interested in watching the film in the first place was because I had previously read the novel. The novel kicked ass. In comparison, the movie really didn't. The movie deviated from the plot of the novel (which was ingenious to be fair), and instead started to just clone movies such as the non-Hollywood British '28 Days Later'. The original 'I Am Legend' novel is much more similar to Blade, if I had to make any Hollywood allusions- and the entire Goddamned point of the 'legend' part is that the protagonist reaches the climactic conclusion that he himself has become an even bigger legend than the vampires (note: VAMPIRES, not mindless Resident Evil zombies)- through his actions, and then realizes the entire primal fear-based morality of mankind. This film went way off the mark when it came to plot, and I'm not really sure why. If you're going to make a novel adaptation, why remove so many key elements and make it into a complete deviation of the original? The book was widely acclaimed and was a classic in its own right... so why the hell did they decide to make another (slightly) generic man vs. city of zombies movie? Boooo!
Because I already knew beforehand the reason why the main-character becomes AN HERO / AN LEGEND, I thought that the way in which they tried to wrap it up in the mountain colony-- with the cheesy "He saved us... we are his legacy, he is our legend" -- was utter tripe. It was cheesy, rushed, and a full on cock slap to the original author of the novel,- who actually had a point to calling him a legend.
At the end of the day, I think it boils down to the subliminal theme of the novel being too high-brow for the mainstream audience. I don't mean that in a patronizing or pejorative manner. I just mean that your average movie-going fan doesn't necessarily want engaging, complicated and complex plots/themes; they just want big explosions, a lead actor that can make witty humorous comments, and perhaps the odd titty flash here and there.

100% correct. I was just laughing at the end because it was so bad. The infected looked like crap. Should've used life ones like in 28 days later. The thing with the light ruined it. Movie could've been good. You just can't top 28 days later ^^.Zimmer wrote:

I clearly said I wanted a ticket for American Gangster, turns out she gave me I Am Legend, didn't see that one before anyway so no big deal. What I don't get is why he kept putting his hand on the light, was it some sort of Military tactic so they don't see your flashlight too much or was it something else.

WoW!!!! this film had a lot of everything, apart from TITS, unless of course you count Bill Smith as one. Not the kind of film i would sit down and watch again like 28 days later. But i think that was partly to do with the higher budget, 28 days had a lesser budget, and it gave it that grainy feel, plus i think that the I AM A LEG END had the CGI guys from playskol, the only thing that really kept this film going was Will Smoooths acting, especially the part with the dog, that was really touching, there could have been a lot more to this film but i guess they rushed to get it out for boxing day here in the UK, rate this film 5/10
