So here is the situation:
I have 2 36gb raptors in raid 0 as my main c drive, and I have 2 160gb hitachis in raid 0 as a storage drive, and I also had all my games installed onto those drives.

I was using the onboard raid controller, but for obvious reasons I decided to go with a standalone raid controller, so I can change mobos if need be.

So in preparation for moving from the onboard nvraid controller to the standalone controller, I wiped the hitachi raid array and resized the partition of the raptor array to around 40gb (I had a bunch of free space, and imaging a smaller partition will take less time) and left the rest of the space unallocated. I started experiencing problems with the hitachi array, so I got rid of the array and formatted each drive with its own partition.

When I reboot, my computer hangs after the loading screen. If I boot in safe mode, it hangs after loading crcdisk.sys. I have left it sit for hours and it never boots, but if I boot from my windows cd and delete the partitions on those drives, it boots fine. If I unhook those drives, it is fine.

I created a partition and formatted it, then ran the chkdsk utility in windows, with the options selected to locate and atempt recovery of bad sectors, and automatically fix file system errors. It comes back with no errors.

So what is the problem? are the drives defective? did I do something to screw them up? it happens the same with both of them formatted, or just one. I tried it with both. All I want to do is copy my c drive to a standard non-raid disk so that I can image it onto the new array I create with the standalone controller. what do you guys think?

My question to you is, and please don't take this the wrong way, why are you using so many HDDs?  You could just use 1 160 gig at raid 0 for storage and the other for games and the like and just partition the storage drive as you see fit.  Maybe I am just reading that wrong.

I can't use 1 drive in raid 0. I have so many because:

1. the 2 raptors are fast, which makes windows fast
2. I am a graphic designer, so I use a large amount of hard drive space. I game off the 2 160 gigs, so having them in raid 0 means my games perform better. Also, I had the 2 160 gig ones lying around, so I used them.

But why I am using so many drives is not the question, the question is, why whenever I create a partition on one of the drives, does windows fail to boot?

Improper partition size?

It does seem like a really stupid setup. Certainly not one well balanced for speed and obscenely risky. There could be all sorts of reasons why it won't work properly. From the sounds of things you've been fucking about with your partitions all over the place, which isn't usually a good idea and could well be the root of your problems.

Wow. Fuck you too.

Anyways, I found the solution, I ran Spinrite and it has found a number of bad sectors, and is repairing them.

If you think it is stupid then fine, but no need to bash me. I did it because it gives me a performance boost, and that is just what I happened to have. Sure, I could have used something else, but I didn't have something else. So as far as I am concerned, fuck you all for bashing me because I choose to experiment with my own computer..

Except your aimless, thanks for suggesting something useful, +1!
