The filmmakers took actual letters that soldiers had written home and have them read by famous personalities like Michael J. Fox, William DaFoe, Tom Berenger, and many more. The narration is complemented by actual footage from the war and by year by year statistics from the war. All of these things combined, in my opinion, showed how the war went from a popular and gung-ho situation and spiraled into one of the largest civil crisis' in American history.
I don't think I've seen a film that captured the raw hopelessness felt by the troops there better than in this film. It's absolutely gut-wrenching, quite possibly the saddest film I've ever seen.
