I have 2 drives in my system.... 1 has XP pro the  other Home

I use one (Pro)for gaming and one for surfing and downloading (Home)....I have an external back up drive that has images of both from scratch every six months I renew a drive...for instance last week it was the Surfing drive and in 6 months it will be the game drive

I find that I tend to get less problems and my systems seem to run smoother I keep regular backups of my Drivers using http://www.driver-soft.com/ I also keep windows updates on a CDRW and renew it when MS Updates.. That way I dont have to download all the updates when I re image a system

Works for me..

only when something goes really wrong which seems to be every 50 days of so. too much experimenting with beta software and aston shell. also too much ocing sometimes causes corruptions which win apparentely doesn't like
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

what I hate is that windows sometimes gradualy slows down, so you dont realy notice it untill you reformat it. And than you go OMG OMG OMG !!!!
But best thing is to partition you HD and just have system and programs one C drive. Everything else on other partitons including all of the drivers, MP3s, Pr0n etc... That way when you decide you need about 2 hours to format and install everything again (including a bunch of programms we all use). It may be a noobish way of fixing problems, but definitly the most effective one. And its probably the best way to get rid of stuff you "need" but actualy dont need

So "More than Twice a year" and not just when something is seriously wrong.

Scheduled reformatting is for businesses with a fairly limited spectrum of software and for people who don't know how to maintain a PC in peak condition (barring hardware failure). Option five for me.

well about evey year and a half, that's when i usually upgrade my mobo and proc

so a good fresh install doesnt hurt anyone

but normally you shouldnt have too, unless your just plain fubar witha corrupted windows install, seen it many of time, experienced it more then i would have liked

or if your really OCD

a have a buddy who takes his  hd's out, put's them in other system does a data shred , then puts them back in reformats to NTFS , puts windows on...only takes 10ms these days..but jesus

and all he does is stocks and look at porn as far as i know

wait - if you reinstall windows, dont you have to register the same key again?
ive re formatted quite a few times and i have `ran out` of uses for my windows key, meaning i need a new one.

how can some of you guys format over and over and avoid this problem? :S

i reinstall every two months.

Microsoft reccomend that you reinstall often to keep your rig running fast, id find a link but i really cant be arsed.

And if my rig has a crisis i use a ghost image, muuuuch faster and easier than a whole reinstall and having to sit through ages of reinstalling all my programs.  RAID arrays help too

You can usualy use the key as many times as you want; i had to reinstall windows 5x one day (for some reason my rig wouldnt boot into windowss because of DLL's missing) and i had no problems with the key being used too many times.

What version if windows are you using? I was on XP home at the time
