I got a really good deal on a Pentium D 945 and I was looking to upgrade my existing Penitum 4 630.  My mobo (a Giga 945-based board - 81945p-g) is capable of handling a PentD with BIOS upgrade.  I can handle the CPU swap; my question lies in potential OS issues.

1) Will I need to re-install Windows XP Home SP2 after swapping CPU?
2) Will I need to alter the BIOS and/or windows settings to recognize the second core?
3) If it is possible to swap without OS re-install, is that method still preferred?

I'd like to avoid messing with the OS if at all possible, since I'll probably be doing it sometime after the Vista release anyway....

umm im not totally sure, but last time I was at a tech shop, the repair/fitting guy was talking about his recent customer; he didn' have to reinstall the OS cause it was an identical chip that he swapped for the fried one. So i'm assuming you'll have to reinstall.

Shouldn't be a problem. The only time you'd need to reinstall is with a big change like a new mobo or going from Intel to AMD or vice versa.

OS normally binds to the chipset, but if the processor requires particular OS drivers, then you must carry out a repair install, instructions via google.

I had to do this when I switched mobo's, takes about 40 minutes, it resets XP's drivers to standard, then when you start the repair process, it re-binds the drivers to the chipset config you are using.

Worth doing every year anyway, to rid yourself of any driver errors that XP won't pick up on.

I'm not adverse to doing the "repair" install; I just didn't want to have to offload all my "pr0n" (kidding), reformat the whole drive, and reinstall everything.

Using FAST (File And Setting Transfer) wizard, all your happy films can remain in situ! w00t for pr0n!

UPDATE:

I performed the CPU upgrade last Friday.  NO problems whatsoever.  Pulled out the old 630 proc, popped in the new 945 proc.  The machine booted up immediately, BIOS and XP recognized both cores.  No additional settings or tweaks required.
