Newgroups are good. As is IRC. The most practical method for downloading stuff is certainly torrents though. I tend to get very nice speeds on them, it all depends on the SLR and the quality of the tracker though, which is why members sites which enforce registered users uploading or restrict access are the best place to get torrents from.
I typically get speeds of between 500 and 900 KB (that's Kilobytes not Kilobits, would be 4-7.2Mbps) on torrents from members sites, that's on a 24Mb line.
Also in case you are tempted to download illegal content, something I would never dream of doing, you are somewhat protected. Since in signing up for a members site where members must declare that they are not affiliated with any law enforcement agencies.
