Seriously, has there ever been a documented case of death by venetian blinds?

Most parents will not find your implied skepticism funny.  About 9-10 kids a year die this way ...

From 1981-1995, 183 deaths resulted from strangulation by window cords, resulting in a mortality rate of 0.14 per 100,000 for children less than 3 years old.

Reference
Since 1991, at least 130 children have strangled on window covering cords.  The majority of deaths involved outer blind cords and occurred when the cord was hanging near the floor or crib, or when furniture was placed near the cord.  Other deaths occurred when children, ages 9 months to 17 months, strangled in loops formed by inner blind cords.

Yea it's called natural selection... If your kid is stupid enough to get entangled in window cords, and you as a parent are stupid enough not to notice, nature has done justice to this world once again. Bless nature .

You must not have kids, or ever been around them much.  Just a hunch.

A joke is funny to some, but not others.  Most parents don't like to think of their children being harmed in any way.  The thought of any child getiing hurt or killed is just a sensitive subject for me.  Sorry for not seeing the humor in this one.

What humor? What I said is true. Kids who manage to hang themselfs (!!) on a windowcord without anyone noticing hardly deserve to grow up, it's natures task to remove them from the genepool... And don't even get me started on the parents... Unless they were watching the kid trying to hang himself, then it would be funny...

So you think when a child, that is still in a crib, gets strangled by a cord from window blind is a good form of cleansing the gene pool?

I say that if a kid in a crib gets strangled by a window cord someone needs to be arrested...

As I said before, you must not have any children.  I still cannot believe that anyone who values human life, especially that of an innocent child, could defend the points you are.

A child dying because of negligence on the parents part is never funny.  It is as simple as that.  Yes they should be punished.  Yes warning labels should be put on things like this to try and stop other parents from being idiots, but it does not make it right for the child to die.  How could this have anything to do with natural selection?  Please explain.

OK!

both of you stop now before you get this out of hand.

#1) Tiger: I'm with livid here; no, it's not funny when someone dies, at all. look what happened to Elmo and Terror. its only 'Natural Selection' out in the wild. here its called 'an accident'.

#2) Livid: So if a child strangles him/herself on a cord, the parent/s should be punished? i think not. you cant be everywhere at once. say you were cooking dinner. this takes about ten minutes. you have a 21/2 year old that can walk and reach things. you cant keep your eye on them all the time. until its proven that the person responsible for said child was being negligent, i say they're innocent.

I understand your point about being everywhere.  I am a parent of 2, but I would never have put my children in a crib next to window with the cord hanging down.  I can say this because it is true.  I made a point of placing them in a "reasonably" safe situation.

I completely agree with the negligence part.  I just have a problem with parents not taking responsibility.  I have just heard of too many cases where parents blame something or someone else for their mistake.

Maybe not punish, the lose is bad enough, but what do you do?
Me? I'm just ex-babysat.

which also means that i know you cant have an eye/ear everywhere. i was the oldest kid at the daycare i went to (i hate my dad so much for that) and i ended up helping out a lot:

keeping kids from eating things,
stopping then from touching electronics, etc

i swear, if i don't get a job at anything else, I'll get one as a babysitter.

The difference between an accident and natural selection (AKA dying because of stupidity) is determined by age. A toddler in it's crib can not entangle himself on purpose unless the cords were left in his crib, in which case the parents are total retards.

A 5 year old however, can entangle himself anywhere he wants to on purpose (seriously you don't entangle yourself on a windowcord by accident, not even if you're 5...) so if he wants to hang himself on a windowcord then that is f*cking stupid and I wouldn't be in tears over it.

Lot of people think I'm cold hearted, maybe I am but at least it gives me a clear view of the world not entangled (no pun intended... okay yes it was...) in emotions.

General statement, people who kill themselfs because of their own stupidity had it coming, and that also goes for 5 year olds.

As for you Tiger, I'm not disputing the stupidity of kids/parents, I'm disputing the fact you tried to pull a joke out of the deaths of children. in that aspect, you failed.
