I bought a 50's lighter at an antique mall, it works but it was out of fluid, its a flint.

its filled by a felt

The cigar shop aroundthe corner gave me a free fill of fluid, it filled up but when it warmed up and i tried, a flame ouldnt come out, so i took a match and tried to light the end and it bearly lit.

SO
did the fluid absorb because its been dry so long or what?

If you put fluid in the bottom and pushed that cotton thing back it should have worked. I would pull it out of the holder and re do it.

Try and see if there is fluid in there. Like old buddy said you might need a flint if it's not catching a flame. Maybe re fill it again.

No, the flint is working perfect
and it got filled to the top......

I dont want to go replacing it its an antique (:

i bought it for 8 bucks ha

where might i get a new felt though?

I think the felt and cotton stuff just absorbed it because its been dry so long, i dont want to waste money on refilling it though, hhummm

Do u get any flame at all? It sounds to me like u definately need a wick in there...

Wow...that looks almost like a lighter my dad had about 30 years ago. I took it apart (like most curious kids do with, lets face it, everything ) just to see what "made it tick". As coke said, I bet your problem is the wick. If the cotton in the lighter absorbed the fluid, it's in good shape. The wick would be the question...is it long enough? Has it dried out and therefore no longer able to 'wick' up the fluid? Sounds like everything else is in good shape, so I'd exchange the wick with a new one. Good find, Seal!

Oh, btw, you don't have to remove the cotton batting in the lighter...just squirt the fluid into the little hole you see until the cotton becomes saturated (you'll begin to see fluid seep through the cotton). As long as it still absorbs, it'll hold a good supply of fluid. And I don't smoke...Copenhagen ftw!

Oh yeah, you do need a decent amout of wick showing out the top, not just a "stub". Also, there need to be a decent amount in contact with the cotton on the inside...works like a candle. Good luck.

I doubt its the wick, but try it anyway. It can be a bitch to replace, and while you're at it you'll be able to notice whether or not the cotton balls have soaked up enough fluid. The wick should last more than the gas, at least it has for me. I've had to refill it 3-4 times before the wick got anywhere near to being too short, and even longer for the flint pieces.

sometimes the wick gets coated with carbon as well, looks really dark and brittle
