I am currently running this 2.2 GHz Pentium 4: http://www.starmicro.net/detail.aspx?ID=108

But I have just stumbled upon this 2.8 version: http://www.starmicro.net/detail.aspx?ID=542

I don't have it, but everything fits the requirements: Socket 478 and 400MHz FSB. It's perfect. I just wish it weren't so damn expensive.

Worth 169$ for someone that has no chance whatsoever of getting a new computer any time in the next year or so?

I sure as hell did when I upgraded from the old shitty 1.6GHz P4 that the computer came with to that 2.2GHz I linked to. Maybe another 600MHz could still be beneficial. Need more opinions though.

When you did the update from thw 1.6 Ghz P4 you also changed the core from a Northwood, to Prescott. Prescott is known to be quicker, but also hotter. That is the main reason you say a difference in preformance.

Also, if you are speaking about a preformance change in BF2, that would be correct, since the required is at least 1.7 Ghz processor.

I did some research on them when I was looking at potential processors a couple of months ago. The 1.6 I had before had the thermal spec at 70-75°C. This 2.2 I have now is 69°C. I did notice after I put it in that the fan didn't have to run as hard or as long during BF2 as it did with the 1.6 so I don't think the heat was effected negatively.

I was just throwing the heat fact out for an issue with the Prescott core. The big change is how the circuit was designed. The Prescott core was designed to run more efficent then the Northwood cores. The out come is that a very small increase in hertz would increase preformance more.

Upgrading from a 2.2ghz to a 2.8ghz won't make any noticeable difference. Definitely not worth the money. No point in getting a new CPU unless you get a dual-core 64-bit chip.

Adding RAM made a difference for me. I have a P4 2.4ghz and BF2 ran noticeably better when I went from 1GB to 2GB RAM. I also got a big improvement when I got a new video card (128MB N6800XT) to replace my 64MB old clunker. I'm selling the 6800 and upgrading to a 7800GS now, and I'm hoping for a really big improvement.

Can't improve any more on anything other than the processor right now. I already have 2GB which is as much as this motherboard will take anyway. I can't upgrade from my Radeon 9600 because everything else is power supply dependent and I only have a proprietary 250W PSU. Processor seems to be the way to go. I'll just wait for this 2.8 to go below 100$.

Because my computer only has a 400MHz Front Bus Speed so the processor has to have the same Front Bus.
