Your system may already be set to boot from the CD. So long as the CD/DVD drive is set in the boot priority before the hard drive, you will get a prompt on the screen that says to press any key to boot from the CD. It will count 5 periods on the screen, which is the 5 second window it gives you to hit a key. After that it will move to the next device in the boot order.
Off toppic but not really: I built my system recently and bought a SATA drive. It works fine but the drive makes an icon appear in the bottom right next to the clock. It is a "safe to remove icon" Its the exact same icon that appears when you got a mini flash drive in the USB port. I want to get rid of the icon. Any help?
what if you aren't seeing a BIOS screen?
Do you mean the POST screen? Many systems and motherboards come with some type of boot logo on, and that can cover the POST screen. Usually hitting Esc will clear that. Also note that if you want to see what's on the POST screen, which will include the key to enter the BIOS setup, you can hit the Pause key. You simply hit Enter to start it going again.doctastrangelove1964 wrote:

Usually Del is the most common key to get into the BIOS, but some other keys include F1, F2, and F10 for some Compaq systems.
Im not getting and screens.Agent_Dung_Bomb wrote:

the hard-drive light flashes for a minute then stops. Nothing esle.
Yoyu can easily hide it if it bothers you. Right click on the taskbar and select properties. Click on customize. You'll be able to figure it out from there.rawls2 wrote:

Sober enough to know what I'm doing, drunk enough to really enjoy doing it
okay let me rephrase... who do I manually set my CD drive to be the master and hard drive to be the slave?
You have to do it in the BIOS. It has an option to set the boot device priority. Before I dumped my floppy drive my boot order was 1st: CD/DVD-ROM 2nd: Floppy 3rd: Hard Drive. Now it's just CD/DVD-ROM and then hard drive.doctastrangelove1964 wrote:

Since many systems now have multiple hard drives and ATAPI drives, it is pretty common for the BIOS to also have an option that allows you to specify which of those devices is being referred in the boot priority, so if you have a 200GB hard drive and a 500GB hard drive, you select which of the two is going to be the OS drive, or if if you have a CD-ROM and a DVD-RW, you can select which of them will be the bootable drive.
However, it sounds to me like your system isn't even POSTing. At this point I would recommend doing a CMOS clear. If you don't know where the jumper is at on the mobo to do this, try removing the battery for a few minutes; you can't miss it, it looks like a watch battery on steroids and is about the size of a nickel.
