G'day,

Well i'm looking to buy a new computer, and my mate said he can hook me up relatively cheap.

How does this one look?

Motherboard: Gigabyte 986P-DS3

CPU: Intel P4, 3.4gHz

RAM: 1g DDR2 667

Video Card: ASUS 7950GT (512mb)

Harddrive: SATA II 320gb

Case: Thermaltake soprano VX

Power supply: SHAW 650w.

for $1600 Australian.

Is it any good? what changes should I make to it (Mainly CPU, Graphics card and ram)

Cheers .

Ive never bought a comp before, and don't have much knowledge about anything other than GFX cards.

Since everything else is very high end, you really should make your RAM high end too.

2 GB.

So he is building it right.. custom?
If your spending that kind of money you really should go with a core 2 duo.

Well in USD thats a little over 1200 (Had to convert ) you are definitely in Core 2 duo range. C2D's are the king of the hill right now. You want to start with that and build around it. Look at the 6600's.

To give you an idea on how bad that 6600 crushes the p4.
Lower is better. So its the fastest at the top.

Drop the P4. Get a Core 2 Duo. Raise the memory to 2x1GB. Consider DDR800. Keep the 7950GT 512MB. Add a couple of DVD Writers for USD$30 a piece (Samsung and Lite-On are a good combo).

Motherboard: ASUS P5N32-SLI Premium or ASUS P5N32-E SLI (in case the Kentsfield ever drops down to below $400). Both of these have true 16x/16x SLI, in case you ever want to SLI it up, but the non-Premium version of the ASUS P5N32 is only USD$100.

The thing you gotta remember about processors is that rated frequency isn't everything.

Get. A. UPS.

Cheers for all the tips.

On the video card - what would be the next 'step up' from that current one?

@unamednewbie: with SLI, can I still have PCI-e cards as well?

And whats a 'UPS' ?

Thanks

if possible, drop the P4 and get a C2D like evryone has suggested, the E6600 = bes price:performance chip.  DEFINATELY 2gig of ram, thats a must i'd say.  And for the gpu, if its at all possible, id say stretch for a 7950GX2 if you really want nvidia, but personal preferance is ATi (even though i have a 7800 right now lol)  Try for a X1950.  I think the ATi have better image quality (obviously not counting the new G80 cards, theyre probably a no-go for this rig lol)

Again, that being said it may bump your price up alot but it will be worth it.

Sli is basically running two cards connected togeter to act as one (it does NOT double performance! only increases it, albeit alot, but not double)  And only PCI-e supports SLI/Crossfire.

UPS = Universal Power Supply, least thats what i was taught lol

Yup, for that kind of money, you can build a cor 2 duo and even with 1gb of ram, it would crush the P4.

Everything else looks great except the processor.

ok thanks guys. So the Video card - is it good enough? I'm really interested in this. It sounds good, but is there a better one? (obviously there is, but im talking the next one up from it so it doesn't break my wallet)

And the case - I looked it up and its kinda dull. What caes would you recommend? (Looking for stylish, see through side panel, or fully see through)

Next one up = 7950GX2, i dont think the GT has the 2 cards on one, but i could be wrong

Could go for a 8800GTS/X, but that will not only break your wallet but your balls too, theyre very expensive but will last you a verrrrrry long time

edit; the ATi's best on offer = Radeon X1950XTX

Certainly agree with the gent's already,  'bang for your buck' C2D E6600 without a doubt.  I would also agree with Greenboi Radeon X1950XTX I believe was the highest scoring dx9 card ever made.  Obviouslt the 8 Series Nvida monsters beat it, but considering the cheapest 8800GTS I have ever found was $500 then.....  Still as we are now moving into dx10, a slower cheaper card for the time being may be a better option for you.  If you take anything other than the 8 series card's you will be needing an upgrade within the next 12 months for dx10 games (which is extremely anoying for the money a 1950XTX is).  So perhaps a cheap 7600gt in the mean time would be a good idea for you mate, runs most games on high settings fairly smoothly and when you come to swap it for a dx10 card it wont be as upsetting as bining you 1950XTX
