I currently have one of these. It's a XFX 6800XT 512MB PCIE Card for those who don't wanna click the link.

Now most places have stopped selling the 512MB version and the only ones that still stock it are charging silly money for them. So my question is can I use the (freely available) 256MB XFX 6800XT card with 512MB card in SLI, or do I need identical cards?

You need an identical card, for instance I have (2) 6800GTs from the same maker Evga.

They must be from the same maker and same model type, but different serial numbers are okay.

You can get a videocard on eBay, just make sure it is new and from a good seller.  I just bought one and saved $100.

Yes other wise the faster card willl underclock to the speed of the lesser one.  Considering however you can get superior card's for less than some of these discontiuned that may be an option open to you, though from what I hear that isnt advised.
