as some of you might know from hints dropped here and there, i am hoping to upgrade my computer shortly after Christmas. i am getting a C2D E6600, 2 GB corsair DDR800, multiple WD Raptors, 250-500GB SATA storage drive, thermaltake PSU, new case, optical drives, etc. I have and am keeping my x1900xt and Audigy 2 ZS.

the one thing i need help on is a good motherboard.

what i need:

-975x chipset
- availiability to overclock processor (considerably)
- 2 PCI-e slots
- SATA RAID 0/1, possibly RAID 5

i want to stay away from: Intel and Abit. have had horrible experiences with both on multiple occasions.

appreciate the suggestions,

nice suggestion. i read a lot of complaints about the bios though...

looks like its fairly good for overclocking.

i have that mobo with e6600 - only 1st prduction run had bios probs as they were released before C2D

Asus did a bios upgrade after that

Great mobo with some cool extras - like a remote control to start/shutdown the pc, launch apps etc

Its a 775 man, like all c2d but it's a "Core 2 Enthusiasts Dream".

I would also wait on the E6300 processor. Its only a 1.8 but just by changeing the Multiplier to 9X you get a 100% overclock thats 100% stable without any measureable heat output. This chip is what ALL the overclockers are waiting for. It will be out in january and cost about $150. Its going to be an overclockers dream chip.

Besides that, I havent kept up on the mobo's until im ready to buy the 6300 so I can not answer your original question sorry.

i could care less about the actual overclocking, its the speed that i want. from what i see, that evga board is tops.  im not gonna run any watercooling or shit, just a good heatsink (zalman...the 97 or 95) and a beast case. i think that the E6600 is a good mid-range proc. and it has the 4mb cache, vs the 2mb on the 6300. dont worry about price...got a friend working at intel = employee discount.

anything by dfi will sever you well, dfi has the most overclock ability built into their boards. they also have a large community of people who are willing to help, and they also have plenty of custom bios to suit your needs.

Asus seems to have dropped the ball on the 680i chipset .

Due to the underwhelming overclocking experience I had with the Striker Extreme it's hard to recommend this board over the lower priced eVGA 680i which produced outstanding overclocking results. Even so, ASUS is usually really good about creating frequent BIOS updates and boards like the P5B Deluxe improved greatly over time. Therefore, I'd recommend waiting to see how the Striker Extreme improves over the next couple of months if you don't need to purchase a new motherboard right away.
