Help Morbid Find a New Camera!

Hey guys,
I am 17 years old and recently have found myself looking at things with a different perspective. I want to take pictures...Lots of pictures. I am considering majoring in business and minoring in photography. I dunno why, but I want to take pictures all of the time of random things and make my picture tell a story.

I go to school in Philadelphia so there is plenty of inspiration around me, yet I cannot capture this in a picture for I have not a camera of my own. I was reading a magazine in school today called "Popular Photography" and it reinforced my interest in photography and also helped me to understand that there are different types of cameras. Such as Digital SLR cameras, fairly new from my reading. I was looking for a camera under $500. Preferrably around $300. I just wanted to ask any of you photographers out there, what kind of camera can I get for that price that is comparable to a, say, Nikon D80?

Ok, thanks. Will do.

But I know that man people here have photography as their hobby, so I would like to get their opinions on this before I have to make a decision.

Thanks for your help. That is a good camera, but not SLR which I was hoping to find. Oh yea, sorry I didn't specify before but a little bigger in the MP aread, around 7-10 MP would be nice.

One important thing to look for is glass quality.

This was taken with a Canon "point and shoot" Digi.

Model was an SD700 IS, roughly 6MP I beleive.

No photochopping or color correction. That's straight off the camera after a resize.

Fuji makes nice cameras, but I'm a diehard Canon fan, as are most.

Wow. Yea, I was also leaning towards either a Canon or an Olympus. I have an Olympus C-7000, but that is the family camera, and I want a camera that will last me for a while and not become outdated technology, ya know?

Also make sure to browse online for camera models. Most "stores" like Best Buy and the bunch don't carry shit for professional quality cameras.

I was into photography for quite a while, and I had a Canon 50mm SLR camera, all manual. I would suggest, even strongly recommend, going into film cameras and not the digital ones. You'll get to know, and experience more, about different kind of films format which is very good knowledge to have. And I think there is something about film that no digital ones can match. And go with the SLR ones. You can probably find a cheap one used in some photography shops. Get hold of one, and try it out, experience different sort of things (even filters but they tend to be pricey) and when you're comfortable with it, you could invest in a more expensive one.
For 300$ you can have a very good used SLR film camera.

And once you get into black-and-white photography, you'll be in heaven
