As you might have read on these forums, the Finnish Independence Day was celebrated yesterday, but this time with casualties.

An 87 year old war veteran decided to go out the military way yesterday at the Military Parade in the town of Lahti by deciding to jump under a passing tank. According to eye witnesses, the veteran was at first sitting on a bench by the street, when he suddenly rose, walked straight in front of the parade, went on his knees to finally lay himself down in front of a Marksman-AA-tank. The veteran lost his life in the event.

I would of never had the courage to throw myself under a tank it would just be too horrible.

Soooo....  Was he suicidal?  Or is that the Finnish plan for stopping a tank? I mean, it worked in Tiananmen Square, but I think that was the exception to the rule...  I mean, it almost seems like the tank should have had plenty of time to stop, since he walked out, knelt, and then layed down.  I'm sure the driver had no idea, but it's not like he waited until the last second and dove under the tread.

Was he senile or suffering from something that altered  his mind? If not I give him props for having the balls to do it but if you what to kill yourself do it at your own expense I mean he ruined the day for those people in the crowd.

Suicidal, senile or both. Watch the video. The whole thing happened pretty fast. He was among the invited guests, just beside the saluting generals and whatnot. Wearing his uniform and all. As some of you might know, the driver of just about any tank has very limited view outside. It's remarkable that the driver managed to fully halt the 40 000+ kg monster that fast.

We'll you're stupid.
Casualty dos't neccesarily mean dead at all. Look it up. For instance, my member title is "Mass-Media Casualty". It dosn't mean that prime-time News reporters killed me, it means I am wounded by the bullshit constantly spouted by the media. That's what'll happen if you take advice from people who don't have a clue.

Casualty = wounded, but not necesarily dead.

Casualty = respawn next to tank and take out poxy AA

I'll change the OP to inform that he died, so there won't be any semantic confusion.

Everything I've read so far are speculations.

One (finnish forum)theory is flashbacks, but in that case he wouldn't have survived WWII by running under tanks treads. Maybe he'd recently been widowed and saw no reason to go on living..? Who knows.

I've had a T-72 drive over me one time as part of training (between the treads, d-uh), and being under there makes you realize what immense destructional power those things have.

I know! Looks a bit sick when the parade starts moving again, "back to status quo", my ass!
I bet the crowd wasn't cheering much anymore, though..

He really gave the driver no chance to avoid him.  What a sad event to mark a celebration with.

So what if he died, im sorry, but that is one of the most selfish things I have ever seen or even heard of.

Celebrations all around for the Finnish Independance day - and that senile old goat decides to kill himself and ruin the parade by putting a dark shadow over it. At least it carried on - not going to be ruined by one mans fucked up intentions.

While I see the tragidy in this I feel for all who this will of affected.  The family of the veteran, the tank driver/squad and any member of the public who saw this with their own eyes.  I hope that no children were present but unfortunatly looking at the pic there were.  I have no problems with people who committ suicide but this has effected many many others not just family of the veteran.  Still dosent take away any of the tragidy away.  All this on a day of celebration and rememberance, next year the event may be remembered for a different reason.

Yes. Courage. Commiting suicide does actually require courage (even when it is a distorted courage).
