A judge has been asked to settle the long-running controversy over whether Northern Ireland's second city should be called Londonderry or Derry.
Mr Justice Weatherup is hearing a judicial review on the issue brought by Derry City Council.

The council wants the government to accept the council's view that the name of the city is Derry, not Londonerry.

The Department of the Environment has suggested such a change to the name would need a petition to the Sovereign.

Londonderry was established in a Royal Charter granted by King James I in 1613.

In 1984 the name of the nationalist-controlled council was changed from Londonderry to Derry, but the city itself continues to be officially known as Londonderry.

Unionists have opposed dropping the London prefix and claimed it would lead to further alienation in the city, which has a nationalist majority.

Michael Lavery, QC, said the council's view was that the Royal charters establishing the city had been amended by, and were subject to, the provisions of local government legislation.

"Consequently," he said, "when the name of the council changed to Derry in 1984 the name of the city established by charter changed and therefore it is unnecessary to petition the Sovereign in order to do so."

ALTERNATIVE NAMES
Maiden City
Foyle
Stroke City

As well as seeking a declaration to change the city's name, the council has an alternative application which requires the respondents - the government and the DoE - to "take all reasonable steps to bring about the change to Derry and to facilitate the exercise of the Royal Prerogative if necessary".

Titles like 'maiden city', (despite a seige its defences were never breached) 'Foyle', (after the river which runs through it) and 'stroke city', (from Derry/Londonderry) have all been used by people trying to avoid controversy.

The name Derry is an Anglicisation of the original Gaelic name of the city, Doire, meaning oak grove.

The London prefix was added in 1613 when the city was granted a Royal Charter by King James I to reflect the association with the City of London and in particular The Honourable The Irish Society which had been granted lands in and around the city.

Mr Justice Weatherup is expected to reserve his decision.

I'm partial to Stroke City myself.  Sounds like some kind of Porn Theater.

Seriously, though, Derry works fine.

The Catholic nationalists want Derrry. The Protestant Unionists want Londonderry.
I'm catholic, so Derry for me. But the Unionists won't accept that.

Call it Doire or Foyle.

Stroke City sounds like a porn site.

As my Irish mate says, it's not Northern Ireland, it's the North of Ireland ...

Ba cheart do a bheith ainmnithe i nGaeilge. Cathair gaelach atá ann. Níl ann ach cupla daoine ar an taobh eile den abhainn a deireann 'Londonderry'.

Actually it should be called something lame like 'Cross Community City' or 'No Ethnic Tension Here City'.

Call it Derry. Its in the middle.

Derry. The only place were chucking things at the cops is a acceptable city wide pastime. My uncle used to play in a show band in Derry and they had to get a police escort across one part of the city and then the IRA would take over escort in another part. The hand over was always amicable. Weired city indeed.

As Ratified by the Republic in the removal of articles II & III, and accepted by Irish National democrats who reside on the north of the Island it is officially "Northern Ireland" until such time as reunification takes place.  That is how the democratic process works and we have accepted that, except those of an extremist republican view point.

Interesting developments 14 months later.. history is another country eh?

The Queen's advisers could decide to drop the London from Londonderry by the end of 2008, it emerged today.

The Ministry of Justice said today that such matters relating to the Royal Charter "can take three to 12 months" to be dealt with.

Derry City Council have confirmed they have now advised the Queen's Privy Council of a motion passed at a full council meeting in November.

At the meeting, Sinn Fein councillor Gerry MacLochlainn proposed that " this council makes application to the Privy Council to have the name of the city referred to in the 1613 Royal Charter changed from Londonderry to Derry" .

Mr MacLochlainn argued at the time that the issue was purely one of "branding" the city.

The move outraged unionist politicians who said their community still felt the hurt resulting from the legislation that allowed the council to change its name from Londonderry Corporation 24 years ago.

Despite their opposition, the SDLP backed the motion and it was carried by 19 votes to four.

A Derry City Council spokeswoman said today: "Council has advised the Privy Council of the resolution of Council. Council has also consulted the Department of the Environment and the Northern Ireland Office and the matter is progressing."

The name Londonderry was first referred to in the 1613 Royal Charter, which was modified and re-enacted in the 1662 Charter.

The London prefix was attached during the Plantation of Ulster to reflect the work carried out by the London Guilds to build up the city. Before this, the city had been known as Derry, or in Gaelic, Daire, later Doire, meaning "oakgrove".

The drive by the council to redraft the 400-year-old Royal Charter comes after a High Court judge in Belfast ruled in January 2007 that the city's name is officially Londonderry. The court action cost ratepayers in Derry £28,322.80.

The Ministry of Justice spokesman said that the process would take up to 12 months, or as little as three months.

Doire. Definitely. Although that may sound a bit french, in which case I'd go with Derry.

Calling something londonderry sorta sounds like the government went out to the pub and left a classroom of 10 year olds and "Dora the Explorer" to name it.
