Need help choosing a digital camera

I'm tied between a Canon PowerShot SD600 and a Nikon CoolPix S5. My mother, a pro photographer, has had lots of good experience with Nikon cameras. I've had a good experience with my Canon PowerShot A70, never tried a Nikon. My Canon's dying a slow death though. The SD600 seems to get higher ratings on most sites, though not by much. The Nikon also looks more nice than the Canon.

Any photography junkies here who may have experience with both, or similar, cameras?

i currently own a Nikon D80 and couldnt be happier. when i was in Russia this year, someone had the coolpix s5, and it was very impressive. however, i have not heard much about the cannon 600. popular photography (www.popphoto.com) has great reviews of almost any popular camera...i would check out their site. they could tell you a lot more about digital cameras then me.

also, before you rule out DSLR bodies, Nikon released the new D40 for around $600, and everyone is saying it is the best deal out there, hands down. the image quality improvement from regular p-a-s cameras to DSLRs is ridiculous. at least look into it.

I have bought all Sony digital cameras and have had not problems with them. I am on my 4th. My last one took over 10,500 pictures and then finally went out. Fortunately I am getting it repaired for free by Sony!

Here is what I currently have:

Sony H-5 (7.0 megapixles, 12x optical Zoom and many other features.)
Sony U-60 (2.0 megapixles, waterproof down to 5 ft., made of high-tempered plastic, my party-cam)

i would go with the canon, but thats just me. what type of pictures are you going to be taking with it? is it just a general purpose? how much are you looking to spend on said camera?
and i really only have experience with canons at really close up....like of my knives>>>>

but it works great for my purposes. but i would definitly talk to people that have the model you are interested in.
