So while I was sitting here watching TV and cleaning house something odd happened. I was walking to the other room and I noticed an odd green glow in the area around my TV. When I came back in the only thing on the screen was yellow, solid yellow. The sound still worked fine. I thought I would turn it off and turn it back on (that usually works, right?) but the remote was responding. This is the second time I've had this remote problem. So I actually walked over to the TV to turn it off. When I turned it back on the only thing I got was the power light. The TV is about 5 or so years old and has worked great up until this point. Do you guys think it's shot? If so, what kind of TV should I look at getting? I want one that is good enough to be used as a second monitor and at the same time large enough to fill my entertainment center. (The old one is 32" I think.) What do you guys think?
Can you get it repaired?
I have no idea... TVs aren't really my specialty...
Sounds like what happened to our TV, not quite the same but similar. Part that got replaced cost about 20p, paying the guy to come out and put in said 20p item cost about £50 lol. I'd get a new TV TBH, you're gonna need one soon anyway (assuming you're in England which you're probabaly not lol).
EDIT:
If by some fluke you are in the UK: -

For a 32" TV the response time is fucking mental, good enough to run PC games on. As for contrast ratio and luminance it actually beats most PC monitors. And it's piss cheap too. Not sure if it has the right ports for a PC (didn't read that far) but even if it dosn't you can bodge it with a £2 adaptor.

That's bad. I recommend calling the TV repairman to help you move your refrigerator to your computer, and not get off BF2 for the next 3 months. Or just ask him what is wrong, and what he recommends.Krauser98 wrote:

TheEternalPessimist is right, if that tv is five year's old then it would be coming up for replacement in the comming year or so anyway's, just age and shit like that till it get's to the point why spend the money keeping it going when you are just delaying what will happen soon. Plus the fact these mofo's who repair tv's (no offence to any but everyone I have dealed with) like TheEternalPessimist said, charge quite a large fee for coming out in the first place, never mind what has to be changed, and depending on what is broken then that could range from a simple wire connection to a total failure in the tv (is it CRT/plasma/LCD/rear projection?).
New tv's go cheap now, but cheap does not always mean crap now a day's, sure enough there are plenty bad one's but give is a budget and we will find you a good one .

try banging on it,my tv ( "32 ) sony did that, i banged on it and its been cool ever since,the tv is 12 years old now and since i pwned it ,it shows a better brighter picture,lol
I own a vending machine I bought on eBay. I don't even have to open the door to get my beer out... just push a button and out it comes. Why? Because a fridge is too much work, what with the standing up and moving doors and searching around the food and such.Flaming_Maniac wrote:

My price range for a new one (TV) is around $1200. I've read some reviews on c|net, but I'm still an idiot when it comes to this stuff. Does anybody know the dif between 1080i and 1080p? From what I've read it doesn't make a huge difference. (It won't at my house since I can't get a decent normal signal or internets connection from the worst, most ghetto cable company, much less an HDTV signal.) My tubes must be clogged senator.
P.S. Thanks for the help.
ok man so 1080 interlaced and 1080 progressive scan HD....really personal preference. go to a tv store and look at both versions. most of the time you wont be running 1080 anyway. be like 720 probably.
i used to work in an upscale electronics store, and if i were in the market for a new tv, that could double as a monitor.........definitly LCD...plasmas are way to over hyped, with most only lasting in the range of 20,000 hours, which sounds like alot, but when my $200 27 inch lasts 80,000 i think something is wrong...........so what brand?
well if you had the money i would suggest mitsubishi....by far the best tvs out there, bottom line.....ok so next is sharp, great LCDs.....and i think DLPs might be dropping in price pretty quick....do a search for a mitsubishi, or samsung DLP and see what you come up with.....they are both great. hope i could help a little bit.

1080i - interlaced, better for more static pictures, highest res so far.
1080p - progressive, best for high motion shots, better than 1080i for that reason.
720p - progressive, ps3 and xbox360 utilize this most right now. if you plan on getting either, make sure you get a tv that supports this display. in most lcds and plasmas, this is no problem, as progressive is native on them. crts have native of 1080i, but some convert to 720p (hopefully my samsung does that, it says it does, but that doesn't mean anything).
interlaced- alternating lines scan on the screen at different times, but fast enough that your eye can't tell.
progressive - all lines scan across at the same time.

Remember Me As A Time Of Day
I had a 32" TV for 10 years it finally decided to die on me. I had a TV repair man take a look at it, and it would cost more to repair it than to buy the same size TV!! So I just bought a 42" HDTV, you're better off just upgrading, TV's are getting much cheaper especially the CRT's.
1080i, 1080p, 720p = resolutions
1080p = 1920x1080
720p = 1280x720
1080i = 960x540 (half 1080 kinda, get someone to explain the whole interlaced thing)
Best thing to do is like the other guy said, go into a store and SEE for yourself.

My state was founded by Batman. Your opinion is invalid.
So my TV has been working OK since I posted this originally, but I'm still in the market. Thanks for all the help. I was actually thinking about buying a Sharp anyways, thanks Parker. Heggs, thanks for the layout on the dif between i / p and such! Cheez, didn't you read my posts? I don't want to have to get out of my chair, much less go to a store! Hopefully I can order one online and the guy will come and set it up for me. I won't even have to take a shower.
For a $1,200 budget, I would get around a 32" LCD from Samsung. They have pretty good ones at Sam's Club for a decent price if you live in America.
Stick with LCDs for small sized TVs. You probably only can afford 720p for that price as well.

They dont built tv's like they usde to, no sirrie. My Tv was built back in 1991 27 inch, the only thing I have to put up woth is a brightness issue, as it tends to jump up a few steps on the brightness scale from time to time. I know that I'll eventually have to replace it but I've kinda grown attacked to it. you know, sentimental value. I'll keep it until its lease on life finally expires but until then I will continue enjoying watching.
If I had the money I'd probebly by the LCD thats linked up there, just for use as a monitor and the current gen systems that came out, I wonder how well I could multi task. Does it have picture in picture?
