I'm not a pilot, but I am a Marine and my understanding was that it is there to take over the roll of the Harrier which specifically means that it has to be able to take off and land in a vertical manner because of the environment that our pilots fly.Naughty_Om wrote:

EA's version if completely false. only Land can be performed by thrusters NOT TAKE offs. although the F-35B take off is considerably shorter than the F-35A.
